I'll be visiting the state for a little while, and was thinking about this topic. What are the laws, if anyone here is around Utah? Folders? Fixed blades? Switch blades? Size requirements? I'm from California, and am used to the laws of no-CC'd-FB but acceptable-CC'd-folder. What is it like there? Anyone have any experience?

well for folding knifes if you hide it the blade must be under 3in but you can carry what ever you want as long as every one can see it.it is all up too you if you are doing bad things the people will be all like he has a knife he is dangeris so dont brake the law in front of the mormens or thay will call the cops

EDIT:The quote above is crap. Don't bother trying to make sense of it.

See Utah Code 76-10-504 and 76-10-501 and you'll see the knife laws you're looking for. Any knife regardless of size is considered a dangerous weapon based on...

(i) the character of the instrument, object, or thing;
(ii) the character of the wound produced, if any;
(iii) the manner in which the instrument, object, or thing was used; and
(iv) the other lawful purposes for which the instrument, object, or thing may be used.

If, based on these criteria, your knife is deemed a "dangerous weapon" in a court of law then you must have a concealed carry permit or it's a Class A Misdemeanor.

Go here for confirmation:
http://le.utah.gov/dtForms/code.html

Search for the words "knife" and "concealed carry" and you'll find the above. There is also a definition of "knife" under 17-50-332 stating ""knife" means a cutting instrument that includes a sharpened or pointed blade." Not that you needed Utah to tell you that.

well it depends if you are in good reason for caring a big knife and no adomadic knifes at all but for fixed blade knifes are 5-6 in you would be fine but if a cop asks just tell hill is a tool.

It might be a good idea not to say anything if you don't know what you're talking about, otherwise you can lead people astray.

I've lived here for 2 years, and carried everything from a SAK classic to a Spyderco Military around town and at work and never had any problems. I've also carried a Condor Golok when hiking. This is in Provo (home of BYU) and Orem. Also if you get a chance BladeHQ is in Lehi I'd stop by there if you get a chance (same town as Cabelas) they're very friendly and while they don't have a lot on display are willing to show you anything they have in stock if you already know what you want to handle. There's also a smaller knife store in Orem, UT called Cutlery Corner off of State street that has some good stuff.

I appreciate the information. I'll be in that part of Utah in mid-April and was wondering if there were any good knife shops.

I have lived in Utah my whole life and never run into problems with people saying anything about carrying a knife. It does need to be 3" or under if it is concealed, but you can carry anything as big as a sword if it isn't concealed.
If your into any custom work I would suggest you look into Razors Edge. It is in Salt Lake and John does just about anything. He does some good sharpening too!
