I've been looking at buying a carbon steel Utica muskrat off of knifecenters website, the price is good and I love the pattern, but I have a slight problem buying something I can't hold in my hand first. Has anyone tried this pattern by Utica, or for that matter any of the new carbon steel folders by this company? Does it hold an edge well, good fit and finish etc. ?

Run a careful check of the archives. There were a few posts quite recently that indicated Uticas aren't terribly well made. YMMV.

I've been lucky finding some good vintage Utica/Kutmaster stockmans at shows and flea markets. I have heard that the new ones are well made too. Only way you can find out is to dive in.

I also was thinking about Utica/Kutmaster stockmans, made in the USA with 1095.
Searched the web and BFC for info, found few reviews or owners of the latest knives produced in NY.
Was even thinking of sending Gus and Blues a PM, if they own or heard anything about the company.

Although I have a couple of older ones and they are excellently made, I come up empty on any of the new ones.:grumpy:

One of the Utica's that I have stumbled across is a serpentine Dr knife. It seems to be from the 20's or 30's and has been the inspiration of a couple of customs that folks have made for me.

Thanks Gus.

I did see where a BFC member bought a Barlow not to long ago. Other than the main blade spring a little on the weak side the F&F was OK and the knife was workable.

I would order one of these soon but last night the wife said this from behind her computer: I'm ordering from Amazon, do want anything. That's how I have fewer bucks now because of buying a couple of Bucks last night. LOL :D

I've handled a few of the newer Utica's and I can say that the Quality isn't quite the same level as a GEC or Case but it is pretty respectable for the price, IMO they fill a nice price (25-35 bucks) niche in the market and are definitly a step up in quality from a Rough Rider or a similar import knife.

Thanks Gus.

That was I. A fair enough quote of my assessment.
A fair deal for the price. GEC's they are not. But they don't charge GEC prices, either.
