Anyone know anything about Utica Cutlery's new Catskill slipjoints?

It looks like a nice line of traditional knives with 1095 carbon steel blades, brown jigged bone handles, and nickel silver bolsters. And they're made in the U.S.

The prices I've seen 'em going for online are quite reasonable.

Their Big Pine line looks good too. Green handles.

I'll be honest, I didn't even know Utica Cutlery was still around. :o Has anyone handled these? I'm curious if they're a step up from, say, Bear.

I may be wrong, but I thought Ka-Bar bought the Utica patent (also, I believe that KB is located in Utica?).

I don't know about KA-BAR buying the Utica patents, but I do know that KA-BAR is located in Olean, NY.

How close Utica is to Olean, I don't know.

I took a look at the Utica knives, and I think I'd like to have the Barlow. Had one as a kid, so it'd be a sentimental thing, kinda.

No relation between the two. Kabar is in Olean. Alcas did buy the KABAR trademarks in the late 90's

Utica has been pretty limited in producing traditional slipjoints for many years, from the 70's on until recently they offered only a small line of traditional slipjoints with delrin handles under the KUTMASTER trademark. They were not widely distributed or sold. As a company Utica was kind of "under the radar".

That seemed to change a bit when they started making a couple of traditional patterns in bone handles and SS blades with the SCHRADE trademark for Taylor Cutlery. Then recently they started making some 1095 slipjoints in both bone and delrin handles for Moore Maker.

Now it appears that they have a nice line of reasonably priced slipjoints using the old UTICA trademarks that go back to the early 1900's.

knifecenter.com has them. Don't know who else.

Check out the working knives too. Someone was asking about modern TL29s and check out the 4 1/2" rope knife :O

Thanks for the heads up. I spent my teenage years near Utica and I've never had a Utica marked knife. I'll have to pick one up for the sentimental value.

Thanks for the heads-up.

The BuckStag looks very similar to the Uncle Henry scales, and the Pine looks like the same scales that were used on the recently produced Schrade Everlasting Sharp series.

Interesting:thumbup:

Anybody actually HAVE one though? What's the F&F like? Line drawings rather than photos tell little.

I like the look of the Big Pine series, but is it dark green or some lurid emerald green?? Also, the blades are described as being 1095 high carbon stainless steel....er....??

I think quite a few of those scales are the same picture, just photochopped onto different knives. Not sure what to make of that.

I have a Barlow coming. I'll let you know.
My hope is that the fit and finish will be on the order of a Camillus or Schrade.
Hope it is better than Bear is said to be. I don't expect GEC f&f.

I haven't had a Barlow in my pocket for something like 40 years. I carried one for a spell in my teens or thereabouts.

I'll anxiously be awaiting your report, knarfeng, because I want one, too.

My first knife, well over fifty years ago, was a Barlow. I got it from a junk bin at a little store down the street from our house for, I think, about twenty-five cents. Big money to a little boy in those days. One of the scales was broken, and so was the small blade (the tip was missing): I can't tell you how proud I was of that knife.

If you report that this new one is decent, I'll be ordering one, too, if only for the memories.

we'll be getting a review:thumbup: if it's on par with camillus or schrade then i can guarantee i'll be picking one up:thumbup:
cheers
