Utica Pocket Knives

I have a single blade Utica lock back pocket knife. On the tang the words stamped in decending order are Utica, Stainless, and Japan. I wasn't aware Utica made knives in Japan. I thought they were made in Utica New York and Germany. I can find no information why Japan would be stamped on the tang. Does anyone know why Japan is stamped on a Utica pocket knife tang?
I would appreciate any information you can give me. Thanks.
