I am really knew to looking for knives. I’ve never really been a “knife” guy. I know what I am looking for right now. I am looking for a fixed blade knife to carry hiking/camping/backpacking/hunting. It doesn’t need to be super long as I have a hatchet, and it doesn’t need to be great at cleaning game (I will have a small sharp pocket knife). What I am looking for is more of a general purpose blade (shaping, fire starting, cutting chord, and basically all the utility functions that you would use a small sharp knife for and you don’t need a hatchet for either). My only real requirements are a sheath, full tang, and not super long (so overall length shorter than 8-9 inches). I’d really like stainless steel, but I can be talked into other blade types as well. I’d just like to have some logic to the type.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Look at knives from these companies:

Mora

ESEE

Ontario

Condor Knife & Tool

Mostly tool steel, some stainless, all over the place as far as prices, sizes, and everything else. Somewhere in there, you should be able to find something you like, and can afford.

Welcome to the forums Remington.

Most importantly ... what is your budget?

You could spend $50-200 if you wanted too.

A few options. Linked from BHq for easy reference.

Thank you. Budget is about $30-$70. Is rather not go over $70. I’m expecting in the $60s or $50s.

Mora Garberg...full tang, multipoint sheath. Mora Kansbol would be a cheaper alternative, but it is not full tang.

I like the original Cold Steel SRK but with a 6 inch blade it's too long. The new Cold Steel SRK-C has a 5 inch blade and is overall 9.5 inches. It's not a full tang in the sense of having and exposed tang and scales, but is a full length or stick tang, whatever you want to call it. The advantage to that design is it's not as cold in your hand when working in cold environments.

Ontario Tak-1?

I had one when it was just the Ontario Tak. Was one hell of a good knife. Full tang, size is right, should be able to find one around $70.

Maybe :
Ontario RAT-5
Cold Steel Tanto Lite
Cold Steel Finn Bear
Marttiini Lynx
Linder Classic
and many more

I feel you are missing out. Full tangs are good for chopping and prying heavy work. Which you say you font need this knife to do.

I’d go with a Buck, full length stick tang. A stick tang makes for a livelier blade and better handle shape less potential for hot spots, and lighter weight. Still plenty strong.

A Buck 119? Or 117?

IMG_20200602_125255~3.jpg IMG_20200602_125255~3.jpg take a look at the bushcraft 3 made by reel steel . It as a D2 blade and as a full tang .

If you really, really have to have a full tang, Mora Garberg. Me, I’d take the Kansbol.
Or Varusteleka Jakkaripuukko. I have used it side-by-side with a Kansbol, and it cuts just a bit better. With a nice dangler sheath, it should come in right around $70.

Welcome.
For your stated tasks a hidden tang will do just as good as a full tang.
You are blessed in the sense, that you are not a 'knife guy.' This means you wont suffer from being a steel snob like many of us here and will be able to buy an affordable knife able to do all or most of the jobs a far FAR more expensive knife will do.
At the low end of your stated budget, youd be well served by a Terävä 110. Its an affordable knife with a great sheath (I made my own) and quite a large following. You would find few jobs this knife cant do.

Second one down:
