Utility/Defensive Folder for fiancee

Alright, it's gotten to the point where I must get my wife-to-be a knife. I've had enough "honey, will you cut this string/tag off for me" to last me a lifetime, so I'm in the market to get her a knife of her very own.
I think my Kershaw Blackout is a bit tactical for her, but I do intend to teach her how to defend herself with a knife. Any recommendations along the lines of "innocuous-looking utility folder by day, defense folder by subway" kind of thing? Much obliged!!

If I was buying a knife for my wife to carry right now it would probally be one of the Blue handled Spyderco Delicas..Spyderco Harpy would be next..

What size blade are you looking at? Above 3 inches? Below? Also, consider what kind of opening device is easier for her to use. Thumb studs, hole, disc?

See, I knew I would leave out details. :-)

Probably 3" or shorter would be best. Any longer would be too much for her, I think.

I think a thumb stud would take longer to get used to, but (imho) is better once you are used to it.

I agree about the Delica, or possibly the Endura with stainless handles. Either one of these would be a fine gift that would be a functional piece for your wife to be.

The Spyderco Delica is a good choice if she's comfortable with a thumb hole and they're not too expensive. If you're on a budget, you could consider a CRKT Lightfoot Urban Shark.

I would consider a small fixed blade. What comes to mind is an EKI La Griffe or a Cold Steel Mini Tac.

Spydies... Bet you can't buy just one.

Why don't you take her to a knife store, let her handle some quality knives, and let her pick out the one that she likes best. That way you don't get one that is too big or too small for her, plus she will get a design she likes. Also, if she picks it out she is more likely to carry it.

My X-Fiance used my BLACKED OUT DELICA for years. Now, she only carries a Cold Steel MiniPal...

She is good and quick with it for defense, and it is always there for her when she need to cut stuff...

If price isn't a concern, check out William Henry Knives.

They're beautiful, elegant, smooth, sharp, well made, and a little on the small side. All perfect attributes for a ladies/gents knife.
My wife handled the MOP Spearpoint a couple of months ago and she loved it.(Me too by the way)

Also, if she really had too, these knives could slash a BG, but I would have to imagine that this would obviously be only used as a desperate last resort move anyway.

If on a budget though, I too would recommend the CRKT Lightfoot Urban Shark (LUS) or even the CRKT Mirage. Both are fine knives of good quality that sell at very, very reasonable prices.
For price comparisons check with One Stop Knife Shop and also Bayou Lafourche Knifeworks.

Good luck with your search.

I like the William Henry Idea as well. The Lancets are a great size. Maybe get her this one....it's GORGEOUS!

that one is only available at knifeart.com, but a lot of WH can be found elsewhere. Prices are the same for the same model everywhere.

Lomic,
Is that "Apple Coral" or do my eyes deceive me??

When I had to do what you intend to do, the first thing was I got out all my smaller tac folders (BMs and CRKTs mostly) and let her try each one to see which see liked. Finally narrowed it down to the CRKT Urban Shark and MicroTech Mini Socom. Both are easy to open and small enough to cram into a already crowded handbag.

That IS Apple Coral with a Paua Shell thumbstud and hand-stippled bolster. Ain't it a beaut?

That film is REALLY impressive.....

On the folder question, i agrre with most of the other guys... let her pick something she likes, she's more likely to use it...

As of this moment, Smoky Mountain Knife Works still has the medium plain edge Mirage on sale for $10. It is a quality, sleek knife. Not tiny, but not nearly as big as the large, which also remains in stock there. IMHO that is the best knife deal on the web right now. I keep thinking they have to run out soon, so don't wait too long if you decide to go that way. Otherwise, you'll have to be paying $30+ somewhere else.

Another bargain knife, that might well be too far out, is the small Impulse by Outdoor Edge. I've the large one, obtained used, and I am amazed that it sells as low as it does. A Darrel Ralph design, sexy as hell, and for sure a capable self-defense knife should the need arise. I'd suggest 1SKS or Bayou LaFourche for that. 1SKS will match prices.

Good luck. Much envy that you found a woman who will willingly join the "knife world" at least to some degree. Color me green.
