I am looking for a 5-6" utility blade. Right now I am looking at a Livesay ICU (or maybe AA) and an Allen Blade Field Trek. I could not find much information on these using the search function, so I wanted your opinions. Also, feel free to include other options. This knife will be for general field use. Price should be somewhere around $100.

Between the two makers that you have already researched I personally would choose a blade from Allen (no pun intended). Great Value for the price, not unlike a knife from Livesay. However, where Allen's work does differ from Livesay's is in the finishing of each piece. Allen's knives SHOW the extra time and attention that he puts into them. Finally, with Allen you have several choices of Steel, blade Finish, etc. And if you choose to excercise your ability to choose you will see the value of good Customer Service.

Another Maker that I would recommend is Bob Dozier. Only slightly higher in price than what you are looking into. Bob uses D2 but he has been making knives for longer than most folks (including me) have been using them. Bob makes several different styles of knives and while many are relative to a certain task there are also plenty that will function superbly as "General Camp" knives. His Grinds are nrealy flawless and his heat treatment of his knives is legendary. Bob makes a truly GREAT using knife!! His site is www.dozierknives.com

After you have decided and purchased be sure to come back and post Why you chose the Maker you did and share what you like (or even dis-like) about the knife you bought.

I definately can't argue with you about Dozier's knives. However, they are a little too expensive for me right now.

Does anyone have any info on the ICU. I know there are a couple of people here that own one. All I have seen is a pic on the Livesay website.

I had an ICU....sold it to financa another knife

It wasnt very pretty, but it was tough as nails. Newts kydex is good also, the sheath was a little to tight, but well made. All around, I think its a knife you can have complete condidence in...enjoy it.

Check out Gary Bradburn. Don't have his address handy, but you can find it on the link section or Top of Texas site.

Yup, give Allen a call. That Field Trek is great knife for the money, and his sheaths are top notch as well.
If you want to check out a review, I think there is one on his forum. Just go to his website and there is a link to the Blade Board there.

I have an ICU. It isn't pretty but it is as tough as nails. It is a great value for the money and is a knife that you don't think twice about pulling out and using. Btw you can't go wrong with Allan Blade or Bob Dozier either. You'll get a great user any way you go.

Could you tell me the OAL and blade length for the ICU so I could compare it. All I have seen is the picture because Newt doesn't have the stats on his website.

Thanks,

If you don't care if its custom or production you might want to check out the Buck Intrepid. It's a good hard use knife.

The blade on my ICU is 5" right on the button.

I haven't used mine much, my limited exposure indicates the best feature on the Livesay to be handle ergonomics, worst feature (to me) is the sheath, which is quite large for the knife. Looks like it was designed for military web gear.

Between Blade and Livesay I would choose Blade every time. The fit and finish are far superior to Livesays. Dont get me wrong, Newt's knives are definate users but they pale in comparison to Allen's. You get a lot of bang for your buck with Allen. I still can't believe he sells knives as nice as his for those prices!
