Utility of a BOOT KNIFE ?

Was wondering if any civilian on this board has ever found a practical usage of a boot knife? First of all, the need for defending oneself with a knife doesn't arise in most of our lives -- very often. Second, the ability of find and draw a boot knife under extreme duress seems questionable. Third, most boot knives have 3" or 4" blades, which doesn't seem ideal in a real defensive confrontation.

Excepting those in law enforcement and the military, are these boot knives just fun ornaments? Some are very pretty, and fun to collect....
