utility of a trapper-style folder?

I've lately become infatuated with two-bladed trappers and I'm thinking of getting one as a more elegant looking edc than my usual suspects. Can anyone comment on the usefulness of such a knife in the woods or as an edc? How about brand recommendations. I've seen some from Boker, Schrade, and Smith & Wesson that I liked.

Buzz Saw is nice. I bought one on a close out in Lowes. The blade is a little thin and came with a bad wire edge but the saw is really good, pretty much like a SAK Saw. It comes with a pair on really usefull metal tweezers and a metal Pick which coult be improvised into alot of small tools in the field.

As for standard trappers its hard to beat Case but scrade old timers are nice second choice.

I just bought a Buck Trapper (made in China) from Wally World it was only $15.95 so I could'nt resist; total impulse. So far I like it a lot. I am not sure if I would choose it as my EDC but this style of knife has served many over decades before the locking folder was created. I am sure it would serve well in the woods. One short coming is the lack of a lock but I am sure if you use proper care that would not be a big concern.

I love them and own a few. I just like the history.

They do all the cutting you could ever need to do.

I never really carry them because of the lack of a lock and no one hand opening ability, thats two things I really want in a knife.

Case with the nonstainless CV steel, or get one of the closeouts from ColdSteel.

Nothing wrong with the old style knives. I haven't owned one since I was a kid, but the couple that I did have always did just fine. Depending on how much you're willing to spend, you might want to look for a Spyderco Dyad or Mini Dyad or, when they come out, a Micro Dyad. Nice, classy looking 2 blade knives with one hand opening and locking blades. Pretty pricey though, if you can even find one.

EDIT: I just saw that the Micro is out. . . $103.06 at New Graham Knives

I am a fan of trappers for edc, and field use. I own a few Case, Camillus, Schrade, and Boker brand trappers. Case and Boker are probably my favorites. I carried a Case CV trapper for quite a few years when I was younger, and used it hard and it is still in very good condition. Used that knife to make many walking sticks, clean trout, pan fish, gray squirrels, and a white tail or two. These days if I feel like carrying a trapper it is either a Boker with carbon blades or a yellow handle Case mini trapper with CV. Joe

The steel in the Schrade and S&W versions is going to be dodgy compared with a more upscale model.

I like Camo Kid's reccomendations  You might want to check out the models from Carl Schlieper AKA "German Eye" Brand as well.

They have everything from Celluloid Handles to Bone etc with assorted blade lengths.
If you can get one in Surgical Stainless - you'll love it.

Carl's steel is soooo easy to work with. - they have great edge retention as well.

I didn't know Case had any with carbon blades - I thought all of theirs were stainless (I prefer carbon). I'll take a second look.
