I am considering ordering a Livesay #164 'Celt' my queations are: Is a sheepfoot blade good for general hunting use(not skinning)? what was it designed to do? and what are the disadvantages of it?

Thanks, Jesse

As far as i am aware, it is known as a sheepshod, although that's not really all that far from sheepfoot. I have one on my leatherman WAVE. As far as i can tell, the main advantage is that it's incredibly hard to stab yourself... very safe (but SHARP). I think it would do fine for hunting, depending on what you want it for.

Scouter, welcome to the forums, one of my favorite blade shapes, very handy when you need to work using the tip of the knife, easier to control where you are cutting. I use one for cutting patterns out on leather or paper.
I just order the top knife at this link from James Mattis, sweet looking wharncliff blade and with VG10 steel.

Also I like that blade shape for wood carving and whittleing.

I love the sheepsfoot blade for utility purposes (along with the hawksbill which I like even more). However, my experience with skinning animals is that you want a knife with a lot of belly (a la a spear point or a gentle curve) to avoid poking holes through the skin as you take it off. You mentioned that you did not intend the knife for skinning, but other than skinning, I never saw much use for a knife for hunting...

I have the FIRST Celt that Newt built. It is a great all round utility blade. As noted above it is not a skinner but has the advantage of having a very strong point and a straight edge, which is very easy to sharpen. If you get a Celt you will not regret it.
