Utility of Tanto Point?

I am considering buying a tanto point NICA Sebenza. I am a long-time Sebenza user and own the classic and regular versions in both the large and small models. Does the tanto point offer any advantages in terms of actual use? For example, does the tanto cut differently or is it more useful for certain functions, such as self-defense? Earlier posts do indicate that the forward part of the grind seems to be sharp. Any guidance I can get from experienced users would be appreciated very much. Thanks.

I really like mine. I find the tanto usefull as a straight edge. As you said the front portion is very sharp. It has a very pointed tip. I would pick one up while they are available because I think that regardless of how you like it, it does have collector value. For 99% of the cutting I do it works fine. The spine of the blade is thick almost to the tip and should have a better penetrating capacity that the regular Seb. Actually the way the tip is on the tanto and its sharpness makes a perfect package/letter openner. I find the blade shape useful to me more often than not. I would be carrying it right now but I'm currently enjoying my new LE large 2006 Buckeye Burl. Pick up the knife they may be hard to get and I think CRK did a very good job on this knife and what the heck it's a bit different.;)

Ditto everything ScottDog said, even the carrying a LE woodie myself at the moment. The tanto's are really sweet! Great utilitarian folders; very practical, very useful IMO. The cool factor to me is the ability to switch from using the belly of the knife to just the front portion for finer cutting. ;)

Thank you for the feedback. I just went ahead and ordered a tanto Sebenza. I use my knives and wanted to make sure it is practical. I am really looking forward to getting it.

By the way, I was carrying a LE wood Sebenza today too. It is a large walnut burl. A really great knife.

Thanks again.

Nice walnut burl! I think that the LE's stand up very well to everyday use. I would be carying the tanto but I really think they did a great job on my LE so I've been test driving that lately. I think the NICA tanto is a nice useful knife plus to me it has a "cool" factor that I like. When it comes down to it that's what it's all about, having something that you think is cool and having it suit your purposes.;) :p :)
