So, back to the Hasiya.

I'd be really interested in a villager style, or even ugly/utility villager style hasiya. Ever since I saw years ago that it was the most commonly used blade in that region. I'd like to avoid the high polish and finishing, as I want a tool, not a decoration, and I don't want to pay extra for looks.

What styles and shapes are the kamis making for the locals? What are they using in their gardens and fields? Can we get some of those?

Please?

im pretty sure they can make them, and will, considering the level of support on the forum for the blade type. a high polish is actually very good for a wet environ because it rusts less readily than the satin or regular finishes.

I dug this out of the plastic box in the back of my Jeep. It lives there when it's not actually in almost daily use (as it has been for years) at my community garden plot.
It's shown with the authentic Red Ryder BB gun scabbard in which I keep and carry it.:p

The blade hasn't been cleaned in years except to wipe the stickiest stuff off with whatever old rag is handy. I touch up the edge with the chakma of a 15" HI AK that also lives in the Jeep.
Now I will go throw it back in the box where it will be handy tomorrow. The dinosaur kale shown with it is about the only thing surviving in the 100+ heat, so I have a lot of tough, dried-out tomato plants to cut up and compost.
Polished works for me.

Thank you for the report, Berkley my friend. I just love the looks of these. So elegant, yet fully utilitarian.
The plus side is that the polished finishes clean up much easier than the forge finish ones.

Polished, huh? I remember reading here previously that the villager finishes are more resistant, because they hold the oil better. That's what I'd be into then.

Berkley, Are you happy with the shape and size? What size is that anyway? Sounds like its very functional getting daily use in the garden, that's what I'm looking for. I'd probably use it more than the KLUVK and AK.

I know since I got my kvluk its all i use outside, but if you are running a garden I can't think of a better tool than the hasiya

That one's sure holding up well considering it used and abused and not given much attention. Apparently it doesn't need much attention. Still looks really good after all these years.

Wow, Berk. Yours looks great. Mine is rocking and rolling along, but its down to a satin finish...wouldnt trade for anything;)

A scanner shows better than words the actual condition of any blade. Neither of these bladed tools is going to win any beauty prizes.

Each is in the condition I left it after its last use. In the case of the kukri, I used it to cut down and cut up a row of sunflowers. Yeah, I hear ya "Ooh, he-man, cutting down sunflowers with a kukri".

These babies are 12 feet tall, and I'm going to make a walking stick out of this one.:p

One of my jobs at our large community garden is tool maintenance, so I get to play with dozens of spading forks, shovels, hoes and more exotic tools to my heart's content. Everyone has their own preference in tools. Some people like a long-handled shovel with a square blade, I like a short-handled shovel with a rounded blade. One size definitely does not fit all. Finding the proper tool for you (or me) takes time and experimentation, whether the tool in question is for digging or cutting.

Great pix!
Thank you for sharing, Berkley

Love those pics, Berkley.

Personally I'd love one in a little more of a no-frills villager style, but still with the nicely polished blade. Actually I'd love one no matter how it comes out, just as long as I get a chance to buy it!

same, i really love the style of them, as well as the function . gooooood for any collection

Do these usually come with no sheath? Or one of those round wooden scabbards, or what?

Man there sure is a lot of buzz goin around about these hasiyas. Better be on your game when they start dropping cause they are gonna go quick.

yeah im glad so many people are into the idea, because it promises some will be made ! -- on another note sharks be ready for smatchet season! coming in september(so ive heard)

This video (starting at 0:33) shows some piles of "villager" sickles from India, with similarities to the HI hasiya; along with billhooks, etc.
(Reminds me of a thread a couple years back proposing that HI make a new offering called the "Uncle Billhook")
