Hi,

I'm looking for a new knife for camping. Something on the small size as I already own a BK7 for bigger jobs.

I'd like something that I can used for wood carving, which I always enjoy a lot, but that can also be used for general utility purposes like food preparation, setting up a tent and so forth.

I would really appreciate any suggestion

Thanks a lot for your help!

Thanks Bill, Yes Mora are good knives but there are many choices. Let me give more context as my initial post was a bit generic.

Right now I'm looking at Mora Companion, Mora 106 and considering the 120.
The companion seems to be the classic versatile knife. The 106 should have an edge into carving but less versatile for general use. The 120 I think it would be too specialized for carving with such a short blade.
Now what I don't know is how much of a difference is there between these knives since I don't own any.
Is the 106 significantly better than a companion for caving?
Some perspective from owner of these knives would be really appreciated.

What kind of carving are we talking about? Most carving knives have blades under 2".

just some fun carving around the camp fire. Latest things I caved were a small baseball bat and a wood knife. I may get into more complex stuff as I learn but nothing particularly advanced.

Well, then, you might consider the Mora #2/0, with a plain wood handle, which allows a variety of grips, and a 3" blade, which gives better control for whittling. I'd also consider a traditional folder, like a 2 bladed jack knife with large and small blade, like a Case Texas Jack, or even an SAK, which can come with other handy tools, like can openers and saws.

Thanks for the suggestions. I didn't consider the #2/0 so far but it looks interesting as well. I already own a SAK which I don't use very often, not my favourite for carving and comfort in the hand when used for extended period of time.

Ok I decided to go for the Mora 106. Now the challenge seem to be buying it in Canada. I was able to find other models online but not the 106.
Maybe I'll find a US dealer that ships to Canada at decent prices.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

I like the 106, but the 120/122 knives are IMO better for whittling/carving purposes. Those are the two I use the most, out of my pile of woodcarving Moras.

While a folder, an Opinel knife, has a larger, round wood handle, that's pretty ergonomic, and the super thin blades, can cut wood very aggressively. The lock they feature is rudimentary, but more than serviceable, and in my experience, is very safe.

+1 on the Mora, I have 3 of them and I use one around the house as my primary carving knife. I have a small kit of carving kinves but the Mora is my favorite.
