This is my first post here so bear with me... I'm an avid Benchmade fan but I'm giving some serious thought to buying an Emerson sometime in the future. (I've wantesdto for awhile to be honest) The primary use for it would be utility oriented, defence would be a secondary consideration. Does anyone have any thoughts/opinions on this? I'd appreciate it.

The Emerson is not my daily carry, but it is one awesome blade, especially the CQC7B, for utility purposes. Feels great in the hand and is fairly light to carry in pocket.
Hope this helps a little bit, of curse those Benchmades are awesome as well.

Well, if it must be an Emerson, then go with the CQC7 spear point. Its blade shape and handle configuration is the most versatile of the production Emersons. The Raven isn' t too bad but its scales flex like it was going out of style, at least on all the ones I' ve handled. Too bad plain edges aren' t readily available.

My vote is for the Commander. I have found it to be an excellent utility blade, and it will also double as a rapid deployment defensive weapon as well. An all around winner.

tkepo115, welcome to Bladeforums! I have also been an avid Benchmade fan (although not as avid as I used to be, that is until I got an Emerson). I would say kudos to the Commander. It has a very nice blade length for utility purposes and is excellent for defense. Perhaps this pic would help to convince you:

Anyways, the price on average is higher than the average Benchmade, but if you keep your eye on the for sale forum, you can find a great deal every once in a while (that's where I got mine).
In my opinion, I think the quality of the Emersons is much better than Benchmades. Even the more common CQC7 is one of my favorites. The CQC7B is now my daily carry (used to be my Benchmade Stryker). It has been an excellent utility knife and I'm sure it will do well in a defensive situation. It definitely has a better quality than Benchmade's version of the CQC7. Plus it is one of the lower cost Emersons that doesn't sacrifice quality for such a low price. I've seen some go as low as $65 on the for sale forums. Here's a pic of the CQC7 that hopefully will convince you of getting one:

Well, whatever you decide, let us know!

I personally own 3 CQC-7's and 2 Ravens, and I prefer the Ravens. The grip sticks to my hand better, and I like the looks a little more. I have not experienced the scale flex on my 2 Emersons (1 spearpoint 1997 issue, and 1 Tanto 1999 issue), but I have seen a few that have that problem. The "key" is to look the knife over before you buy it if you can, but if you can't Emersons Customer service is great, so you can get it replaced or fixed fast.. Whatever Emerson you pick, I am sure you will be happy, they are ALL great knives!!!

Thanks for the advice guys! When I can front the $$$ I'll definatey get one. Still a toss up between the spearpoint CQC7 and Coommander. As for the Benchmade CQC7's. I have four of them. A small and large with bead blasted blades. And another set with the coated blades. I like them, the quality is excellant and I have never had a problem of any kind with them. Thanks again :^)
