uzi commander fixed blade vs. United cutlery combact commander fixed blade??

Save your money! Both companies are known for making pure junk. With the price on the two, you could buy a nice Kershaw!

I imagine they both came out of the same shop in China, just that one has more pinstripes. Just saying 440 means nothing as far as defining the steel. I would have no use for either, as I've enough tent stakes. Splurge and get the Uzi if you like the design. At least the steel is more defined.

Get the Uzi because it costs more,so it has to be better!

...Oh wait a minute, they're both crap knives. And at 0.10 inches thick, how comfortable do you think they'll feel in your hands?

Welcome to the forums at Blade Forums. Hang around and you will gain a vast store of information that you can use.

Far as the question goes, if you want one of these then I would go with the cheaper of the two. As said, they are probably made in the same factory and I really don't think you will be able to tell any performance differences between the two steels. So save $10 and go with the United Cutlery version.

When I was younger it took buying the low priced blades that made me realize that for a little more money I could get an inexpensive knife that functioned, vs. a cheap knife that didn't.

Again, welcome!

My bet is they are the exact same steel , just different brands. Both of which are well known for putting out low quality gear.

I admit I like the overall shape of the knife in question but if I were you I would stick to some quality brands ( yet nicely priced ) for fixed blades like Ka-Bar Becker Cold Steel and the like. At least then you truly know what you are getting.

These are the two knives in question:

http://www.bladeplay.com/item--United-Cutlery-Combat--7037

as far as i can tell, these two knives are completely the same except for their metal,
the United cutlery blade uses a teflon coated 440 stainless steel and the uzi uses
8Cr14 stainless steel.
has anybody had either of these?
which would you recommend?

Which one would I recommend? Neither. Buy a knife made by someone that has their forums on this site, that would be a start. Don't buy junk.

I have a knife of the same design... I believe mine said Leinbar and was made with ats-34. I've had it since '97...
The blade is a useful shape, I don't care for the serrations on the back to much. I have never used the wire breaker.
It has held up well and gets quite sharp. I used to strap it on when I cleaned my sailboat bottom. It mostly stays in the tool box for the crappy jobs now. I consider having scales made every once in awhile.
I remember seeing some S&W branded models awhile back. Iirc I payed around $70 back then for mine which seemed like a lot for the ats-34 super steel ;)

Neat lines, but honestly I wouldn't buy either. These companies are known for producing cheap cutlery with questionable quality. Their product is not guaranteed to be good, so you're playing the lottery when you buy one. If you're lucky you might get a decently made batch that's actually sharp, if not then you'll get a fancy pry bar. Well, if you gotta have it, pick the cheapest one, as I'm quite sure they're identical except for the paint.

For similar price or slightly more, take a look at Cold Steel brand at knifecenter.

If you haven't pulled the trigger, yet, then WAIT. I completely understand having a limited budget. A very good friend of mine had his knife stolen, while he was unemployed. To him, 20bux was a lot of money, but he still needed a good knife. I told him I would take a chance on the Cold Steel GI Tanto, if I was in his position. He did and it has served him well. Hang out, read a lot, ask questions, and check out all sorts of other info sources. You'll find that there are usable knives within your financial reach. However, those knives get further and further away every time you throw money away on what seems like a nice shortcut.

8Cr14 is a decent steel, heat treatment being key as always of course. 440 series steel can mean anything.
Uzi = sh1t, it is said here. Maybe today it is, I really don't know but I own an Uzi knife that is actually very good, in both design and F&F, with a very good HT'd 154CM blade.

For $30 I agree with the rest though, there are better knives in this class to be had.

Well you got into a mess here hbatt. This forum is primarily frequented by knife afficiandos and collectors and makers...knife guys. I suspect that these knives are appealing on a number of levels but they are not made of very good steel I doubt and they don't look comfortable to use. I suspect their greatest appeal is price.

If you are new to good knives (I am presuming you are) here's what I'd say. No, don't buy those...they're going to be as bad as folks say. BUT you needn't buy a $1,000 custom or even a $100 highish-end production knife to get a good knife.

In that size range you got your good old Buck 119. They sell them everywhere. They are made of good steel (420HC) and they are heat treated very well. They run about $49 at just about any big box store in America that has a sporting good section and are widely available over the Internet. With a Buck 119, you'll have a good knife for a good price, you'll own what is pretty much an American icon, "knife guys" will respect your choice (so you can brag if you like) and you will probably be able to pass the thing down to your grandchildren. A great knife to start a collection around.

Also consider the Buck 110...the even more iconic 4" locking folder.

For a more "tactical" approach there is the Buck Nighthawk...more military looking. Don't get the tanto one.

Don't even get me going on Mora. They're way smaller and can be had for about $15.

Well, the Uzi has the better sheath.....I own both a black and tiger camo in the United Cutlery brand. Got both for less than $30 shipped. And yes, I wrapped both handles with paracord.
