V-edge to convex conversion by hand

I have recently fallen in love with convex ground blades.

Does anyone have any links or suggestions for converting my blades by hand?

I have several V-edge blades that dont get any use, and I figure I may as well convert them to convex edges as that is all I ever seem to use anymore.

I am quite familiar with sharpening already convex blades, but what about full-out conversion?

Thanks

PS. I know there are probably lots of other threads on this topic, but I cant seem to find them (maybe its time I bought a basic membership...)

Quick easy instructions, Get a sharpening stone, and grind off the bevels, then get some sandpaper, and remove the scratches with it in a edge trailing motion like a strop. Raise a burr, and your done! A link to more detailed instuctons I did a while ago.

Welcome to blade forums, but may I suggest putting this in the main forum?

Probably an accident, so no worries... lol

you can also skip the diamond stones and go straight to the sand paper/mousepad technique. It will take more time than if you have a diamond stone to break the original bevel edge. I have done several knives with just the sandpaper mousepad method. Then finishing up the final edge polish on my strop.

samhain73 might recognize that convexed GW in my sig line. It came from him. Made me decide to start convexing and modding my other knives

What would you recommend for abrasive paper? What grit would you suggest starting on?

Thanks

This subject has been covered extensively on one of the 'other forums'. If I remember correctly you start with something like a 200 grit wet/dry sandpaper and work your way all the way up to 2500. Then finish up with a normal stropping. I've had a hard time finding all the different grits at hardware stores but you should be able to find them online.

If you plan on doing a lot of these you may want to consider a 1x30 slack belt grinder. It would make the job a lot faster and they can be had for as little as ~$40 from Harbor Freight. Delta is another popular and affordable brand. I live in an apartment so I haven't had the opportunity to try one but a grinder is at the top of my wanted list as soon as I get a house. Let us know how your project goes!

Indeed I do! I've learned a bit since then, and can get them much sharper now. ;)

Belt sanders can be scary, I had one and gave it away after the 4th knife I removed the whole tip off of. And doing it the Bark River way (nothing but sandpaper) depending on the steel can take hours as well. A stone knocks at least half he time off, and gives the same finall results.
