I'm looking at the Pioneer models with the saw blade. Of the three models, two have a small blade instead of the can opener. One is a hawkbill, the other is a sheepsfoot (like on the Electrician). The knife will be carried mainly when hunting, fishing, and hiking. What are your opinions as to which blade would be more useful? I'm leaning towards the hawkbill, but am interested in what everyone here thinks.

I have the model with the hawkbill. I just got it this fall, so I haven't made a lot of use of it yet. I expect to get more use this spring. I pruned the small twigs off a few dead branches that had fallen down in my yard. It has about the same amount of cutting edge as the small spearpoint, but the curved shape certainly stripped the twigs and bark right off.

The only drawback that comes to mind is that it could be hard to field sharpen with a DMT. You might have to carry a small ceramic rod. This is not an issue when used as a yard and garden tool though.

I suspect that you could make do with any of the three.

I love my pioneer. I chose the Awl, it is very sturdy and highly useful for many outdoor projects.

Try drilling a hole through the handle of your freshly made spoon without an awl, or putting an extra notch in your belt after a huge meal cooked over an open fire.

The Awl model also has a split ring for attaching a lanyard. Very Handy indeed.
