Has anyone had experience with the V Sharp line of sharpeners, in particular the XE model. Opinions? Thank you.

I don't have any personal experience, but I did hunt down a great review on this product (the original not the XE). If the XE is anything like this thing, it's a great sharpener. Going to have to look a little deeper into this thing and might end up getting one for myself. It reminds me a lot of the Spyderco Sharpmaker that I already own (in a way), but much more versatile.

Auto bevel angle adjustment feature is quite innovative but constant spring pressure (maybe a tad more pressure at exit point - stretched spring) is a major design flaw which inhibit refinement edge-works. I would take a Sharpmaker over this V-sharp anyday, just till the blade to get more acute/obtuse angles beyond the vertical 30*, 40*.

I also have suspicious sense sthat knife entry & exit points (heel & tip) could subject to sustantially more pressure than the rest of the edge during a stroke. And this device portability is far from compact.

Hopefully they will come out with an improved-version where pressure is adjustable and not patented - lol.

It does produce a sharp edge but:

The bevel it makes on one side of the blade will always be .25+ inches shorter or longer than the bevel on the other side (because of the way the rods cross).

The frame that holds/aligns the "rods" really doesn't allow for the sharpening of shorter blades (maybe 1/3 of a peanut pen blade would get sharpened).

I had the original model and sold it. I recommend the Sharpmaker over the v sharp.

Looks like it will get a knife useable sharp and with a nice rounded tip.

Hm - I am superlazy and have no idea about sharpening. I just wanted something that works and spent a considerable amount of time researching so that I do not have to spend a lot of time for sharpening, lol!!

I bought the v-sharp XE with 3 different diamond stones for solingen kitchen knives. I did not want to buy a machine because the grindstones / sandpapers for these machines tend to be very expensive.

By using the 3 stones and then the steel (on the other side of the sharpening thingie), I can make them so sharp with the v-sharp xe that they cut telephone book paper very well. So far I sharpened 50 or 60 knives. Takes about 3 or 4 minutes per knife to get it to telephone book sharpness (3 stones and steel, of course you put 50 or 60 knives through one stone and THEN switch to the next stone and the next stone and then the steel :-D), or 1 to 2 minutes each for kitchen sharpness (only coarse stone with or without steel, steel does not really seem to matter a lot for "kitchen sharpness", but is good for touch up). Most knives were really dull.

I think telephone book sharp is not razor sharp, right?

But sharp enough I guess :-).

BTW according to the v-sharp guys you should not make kitchen knifes so sharp, you should just use the "coarse" stone because the knife will then cut kitchen things like tomatos better :-) (because the edge will be more like a sawtooth instead of completely smooth or something)

Can I use the v-sharp xe for the plain cold steel voyagers that I have? (did not need to resharpen them yet)

Can I use the v-sharp xe for the new cold steel finn wolf with this scandi grind, whatever this is?

I also have a transport case for the v-sharp xe, very nice. The v-sharp xe is very lightweight. Not very handy perhaps.

If you want an emergency sharpener for outdoor use, I heard the vulcanus pocket is "good" (I mean, it is a hard metal sharpener, but probably the best "hard metal sharpener". Puts an edge on superfast and can even sharpen serrations...my parents use the "regular version" a lot. Oh and I think its Vulkanus with K. Like the Men in Black K. lol
I dont use it because the v-sharp xe is "lighter" on the knives because it has diamond stones and also very fast!)

Oh and I dont know how long the v-sharp xes diamond rods will last until they wear out, so far they seem to hold up well after 50 or 60 kitchen knives!

Thanks!!!

Someone some number I forgot <--- lol from Europe
