Planning a vacation end of June through the July 4th holiday and would like to know if there are some good Knife Shops along the way that I could possibly stop by.

We run from SE WA through E Oregon then cross into Idaho and hit Boise. From there we travel SE crossing to UT and into Ogden/SLC. From that point it is E through the 'great beyond' till you hit the Western Slope of CO and I'm topping the small mound in the middle

to get to Eastern CO where we'll stay with family.

I've been to Chris Reeve Knives and had an incredible tour there. Any other Makers/Shops out there whom I could contact or possibly stop by? Any suggestions would be great. Does Spyderco sell/tour out of their facility in CO?

Thanks for any info!

tell YOU! Why are you looking at me like that?! Ever hear of PERSONAL
SPACE?! Step back outta my face and look at someone else!.... Is that
a reflection off a camera lens? What do you mean 'Why do I carry $100
in quarters?' Don't you know they put those tracers in the paper money?)

It's to bad in all respects you're sticking so far east. With a small change to your plans, you could visit one of America's finest cutlery shops, Northwest Knives and Collectibles in Salem, Oregon..

If you came to Portland, Oregon, you could visit Portland Cutlery, better than most knife shops, but definitely visit George and Son Cutlery. If you have any questions about sharpening, Carl George has been sharpening knives all of his life and can answer those questions from a lifetime of experience, not myths and legends.

Yep, Spyderco has a 'factory store' on CO93 in Golden. Nice folks there.

In the Salt Lake City area, there aren't too many. I believe there's one in Fashion Place mall, and one in South Towne mall, both of which are about 20 miles away from me (and the downtown area) My favorite one went out of business.

Prices aren't great - but they've got overhead to pay. By this summer, sales tax in the valley will be 6.6%. Hope you find some neat knives.

Thanks for the info guys!

Chuck,
Thanks for the info on Portland. I've been there a few times but never on knife type stuff. I'm gonna try to get to the Eugene Show and your suggestions will give me even more ammo to convince my wife. I usually make it to Portland 3/4 times a year so that is good to hear one there. The Salem shop sounds and looks intriguing. Maybe I can make it a whistle stop all the way through in April.

I picked up some other info and thanks for yours as well. I guess the thing to look at there is the closeouts. Dunno if I can handle seeing all those Spydercos at one time!

Rob,
Bummer to hear that there is not more there. SLC has a lot of other things and I was kinda hoping for a better knife shop there.

Thanks again for the info!

In SLC, you need to check out Sportsman's Warehouse. It's a couple of blocks east of the 7200 South exit. They are a dealer for BM and CRKT.

If you go to Benchmade's site and do a dealer search for the SLC area, they should show up on the list. You can then call up a map from that site and print yourself directions for getting there. They don't have the selection of the mall shop but much better prices, usually about the same price as the internet stores.

In fact, that's not a bad idea for all the cities you are interested in exploring some.

Kirkhams has some fun things at full retail price. They should be on the list at BM too. REI has a few Spyderco and CRKT.

You should probably visit Smith and Edwards as you approach Ogden from the North. I don't know their address off hand but I can find it if you're interested. They are a surplus store to end surplus stores. They'll have knives of middle to low end quality but they'll have so many other things knife folk tend to like too....

There is a custom maker listed in the yellow pages for SLC but I don't remember his name off hand. Maybe you could pay him a visit. I'll look it up if you want.

email me if you want more info: phatch@xmission.com
