Vacations, arc-locks and customer service

Glad to see things have gone quiet round here. Here's a thought - a while ago I was looking for a knife which I could carry in the UK (ie a 3" folder without a lock - in this country a locking folder requires a very 'good reason' for being carried).

So I emailed a whole load of manufacturers and got a whole bunch of emails in reply.

Interestingly the American customer service people all replied the same day whereas the Europeans all replied the same week.
With one exception they all expressed polite astonishment at such a law and so sorry we can't help 'cos all our folders have locks.

The one exception was Ron - he took time out to research UK laws to see if he could help - many emails later and I had a SOG crossgrip. With dedication like that seems to me he must be working all the hours there are plus some so I reckon his break is much deserved and I hope he has a great vacation.

Which brings me to my question. I've decided I do need a locking folder to take on those backpacking trips into the wilds. And I can't decide between the Stingray's looks and the X Ray Vision/PE's arc-lock.

Anyone got any thoughts?

David

Hi David,

The differences between the X-Ray Vision and Pentagon Elite I (PEI) is mostly blade shape and blade materials. The X-Ray Vision has an ATS-34 tanto-type blade. The PEI has an AUS8A spearpoint blade.

Both share Zytel handles, stainless steel liners, and partially serrated blades...along, of course, with the Arc-Lock.

Your decision likely may come down to which you personally like more.

Thanks for the kind comments. I am resting and enjoying my vacation...honestly! :)

If there's anything else I can do for you, please let me know.

I helped as well;) !

However I could not think of a non-locking SOG knife. I will have to look at this crossgrip model.

Hey David,

Yes, The General assisted as well. I corresponded with him via email and looked through his website as it outlined UK knife laws to assist you with your request.

Just giving credit where credit is due. :)

Hi Wayne and Ron

Funny thing - I was just responding to one of Wayne's threads in the Community section before I arrived back here to find he'd posted here.

Wayne, that link was very helpful - led me to the Appeal Court judgement which ruled that when UK law says you can carry a folder that means one without a lock. That's probably why Swiss Army knives are so popular here.

The crossgrip's highly recommended.

Thanks again Ron for corresponding with Wayne and for answering my queries about multi tools. That reminds me - I must get my dictionary out sometime and continue deciphering some of those German emails I got about the inner workings of various locking mechanisms....

Oh, and Ron - if SOG ever do make a folder without a lock and the cutting edge of the blade is 3 inches or less I'll be first in with an order.

The web site is Kits! Credit where its due!;)

Count me in as well for a sub 3" slipjoint. At the moment I am looking at a custom to get this style of knife:eek: !

Ron, I will be getting my first SOG knife fairly soon, as I now have a job lined up I am thinking of a certain field knife in BG-42...:p

The perfect replacement for my BM Nimravious!
