I just rediscoved my Food Vac sealer, you know the kind...sucks all the air of a plastic bag and then seals the bag.

I spent a few hours sealing all my gear. I was amazed at the compression. Now I can store more equipment in my packs. Water proof items to boot!

I never did use this thing for food...

I've heard they are good for packing gear. That kind do you have and how much did it cost? Not the kind of thing I'd drop a lot of money on but if I can get one cheap I might go for it.

I got the one you see on TV, the Food Saver. I love it. I use it for all kinds of things other than food. My wife thinks I'm nuts, but I just love it.

Some of the things I've "vac-u-sucked":
Food
Camping Gear
Gun Parts for storage
Handguns for storage (waiting to try a rifle for storage)
A shirt (yes it is wrinkled, but it stays dry)
Ammunition
Matches and Water Purification pills

I think you should get one.

Yeah... I got the same one as hunt4ever. When I was packaging the other night, I got the same reaction from my wife.

I don't remember how much I paid for it (bought it was a while ago) I'm gonna guess ~ $95?

Foodsaver II from Tilia at $149 new (the one from the TV infomercial):
http://www.foodsaverforless.com/ IIRC they are maybe cheaper when you order them from TV. Given that these things seem to be a "love it & use it all the time" or else a "got it, don't use it much, big yawn" kind of item, you may find someone willing to unload theirs at a deep discount from the new price.

They are indeed handy for waterproofing & compressing items to be put in your pack. The vacu-bags are pretty sturdy. Much heavier IME than the freezer Ziploc bags. The bags or rolls of bagging material (allowing you to make a bag yards long if you like) are pretty cheap.

Man, talk about ultimate gun safety. Just try an use it the a vacuum sealed plastic bag. :) I'd like to see a picture of a vac-u-sealed rifle, for sure. I would have never thought of that.

How long does the seal last? Does the plastic degrade? Sealing ammunition is a really good idea too.

I assume the guns still have air inside the barrels. Do you take any special precautions when storing them this way? Extra oil, special treatment of some sort? Or is it pretty much like regular storage of a gun?

For some reason, vacuum sealers always remind me of some sci-fi book I read once, where on a space ship the food was stored freeze-dried, in vacuum sealed bags. Once inside the bags, it was zapped with gamma radiation to kill off anything left living. Then it was left in a protected chamber, freely exposed to the cold of space. How long do you think food could last like that? Indefinitely?

Pretty cool stuff, I'd love to get one of these. Have to look on ebay. (Maybe a good way to store those extra knives - prevent rust by keeping away the old O2.)
