Awww, thank you!
And yes, my tooling varies a little still. Sometimes it comes out really nice and crispy, but sometimes a little less than perfect. I blame it on leather, at least for now...
I just don't get the chance to do it more often, only did maybe a dozen carved sheaths over the past year.
Vess I'm a long time leather carver and believe me all it takes is practice, practice, practice.
Also careful casing of the leather prior to carving, that's one of the biggest problems for beginners and old time crafters like me who doesn't do much carving anymore and it's just a matter of having patience and letting the wet leather dry too the proper dampness to get a good burnishing action from the saddle stamps and other tools.
A swivel knife won't, can't, make good cuts when the leather is too damp and the saddle stamps won't, can't, make good crisp impressions.
The last few times I've set down to carve a project I have made myself do a few practice runs on some "Rounders" or some scrap leather in order for my work too look professional on my finished project just because it is so long in between times.
A nice smooth job of beveling and backgrounding will go a long way in making other mistakes look less noticable.
My swivel knife work has only been up to what I expect from myself a couple of times, the other times it has been acceptable to others who aren't as critical of me as I am.:grumpy:
I am my own worst critic, always have been.
Your layout and sewing are exceptional and that's saying a lot coming from me!!!!
