I had to go up to Valdez for work, and I thought you guys might like to see what this corner of the world looks like. The pics are from the clear days (mostly) and it's still snowing up there with rain mixed in. Three clear days in 13.

Due to the weather I flew in from Anchorage to meet with some of my crew who drove over. It's a 6 hour drive in good weather, and a 50 minute flight. Of course you have to have clear weather to fly in. The scenery on the flight is spectacular; you cross over 6-7 major glaciers.

The airport is kind of small, This is the total of the baggage claim area...

The town has around 3000 permanent residents, but in season (summer) the population swells to over 8000. There's a lot of small cabins and RV hook ups.

This is the main drag:

Fishing is the major industry, halibut, shrimp, and salmon mainly:

The boats are mostly out of the water right now, but in the process of getting put in. 1 MAY is the normal start of "the season".

The other major industry is oil, and you can see tankers here almost every day.

There's a lot of wildlife, eagles all over, lots of other birds, sea otter, sea lion, moose, coyote, and caribou. And bunnies; story is a resident had a number of show rabbits that got loose and now have interbred with the natives. there's no plan to get rid of them because, "what would the eagles eat?".

The tide changes quite a bit, but no where near as much as Anchorage (which is on a tidal bore and sees 30' of change daily):

All this brown growth is normally submerged:

Valdes is one of my favorite places on earth .You can spend years exploring Prince William Sound by boat. The reason most folks from the interior visit is fishing. There is a nice museum at the community college. I know the lady that donated the collection.
