So very sad to read on Facebook that Jim Merrit has passed away. The Loveless shop has been an inspiration to me and to many others I’m sure. The end of an era I doubt we will ever see again. Condolences to the Merrit family and all who considered Jim a friend. Rest In Peace Jim.

Crap....
This is truly unfortunate...
Rest In Peace Jim
And Peace to his family

Yes. We are diminished and yet have been gifted. Thanks for this.

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we inform all of our friends and fans of the passing of Jim Merritt. Jim passed away early this morning due to a brain tumor and the complications from it.

Jim was one of the true legends of the knife world and was a renowned knife maker in his own right before he became Bob’s partner in Loveless Knives in 1982.

From that point on Jim was the driving force behind the success of Loveless Knives. Bob often referred to Jim as the best knife maker that he knew and the true heart and soul of Loveless Knives.

Jim was an incredibly humble man and enjoyed making knives more than anything else he did in life. He was a mentor and true inspiration to many people and especially to those in the knife making community. He will be dearly missed by all of his friends and family.

We will post information about his arrangements once they have been made. Thank you to all our fans and friends for your condolences and kind words on this incredibly difficult day.

I read the news also yesterday, very sad to hear how it went down. My condolences to his family and friends.

I was lucky to have purchased this knife and Jim was one hell of a maker. This one is a little special because it was made with the last piece of a block of rag micarta that Bob had purchased in the mid 70’s. It’s quite a standout in my display case.

no way !!!!! an era has totally ended now :( the loveless knife was my mentor on what a knife should look like, be, perform, and how it should feel in your hand. i hope you two are having a beer in heavens knife shop. rest in peace.

If Jim's family are reading this, my sincerest condolences to you all.

Jim was an incredibly good man. It was an absolute privilege.

Words simply cannot describe the extent at which I will miss him.

You were always there for me. Thank you Jim.

That is sad.I had no idea that Mr. Merritt had been with Loveless for that long.

I met Jim Merrit at the 2011 Art Knife Invitational in San Diego. As a starry eyed novice, (admittedly I still am) I didn't likely make the best impression since it was such an overwhelming experience, being so far out of my element. I made it a point to meet as many of the makers there as possible, though, and Jim was extremely patient, gracious and kind to me. I immediately felt comfortable with him, and found myself many times during the show at his table when I needed a break. His knives was exquisite, obviously, and he was actually eager to have people handle them. My memory in general ain't great, but meeting Jim made an impression that I can call up today, as though it was made yesterday.
