My wife wanted to do something special on Valentine's Day, so I said how about a fancy meal? in the Crazy Mountains :D

headed in the Crazies from the east side, we've experienced two weeks of well above temps and the results have been pretty dramatic, looks like April instead on February

I was worried we might not have enough snow to pull the pulk, that worry was eased when we were forced to park a mile and half from the trailhead as the road was choked full of snow; on the flip side that was going to make a tough 5.5 mile trip, 7 miles.

taking a break a couple miles in, the climb into Twin Lakes is really tough- it just keeps climbing and climbing, but I knew it was going to be worth it

my worries of lack of snow were unfounded, is this what they call a snowbridge?

You just don't see filet mignon and lobster tail out on the trail everyday, way to go!

Outta the gate, I gotta say you really set the bar high on this one! :D

Well done!

OK, now down to business.

DO NOT let others' wives/GFs see this thread! This is clearly a NSFH (Not Safe For Husbands or boyfriends) thread and in obvious violation of the "He-Man Woman Haters Club" by-laws. Do you realize not everyone can cook on the trail (or are willing to learn.....)?

You're setting us all up for a potentially painful and unfair inquiry/comparison here! Valentines Day is the EZ points "holiday"! Buy a card, some chocolates and flowers and SCORE!!! But NOOOOO - you gotta take the Mrs. up into beautiful snowcapped mountains and grill fillet and lobster.

TURN COAT!!!

:D:D:D

Of course just kidding here. Congrats on a love/relationship well celebrated.

good post. you guys look like you had a great time. Is that a Purcell grill ? I have the one with out the wire mesh.

thanks gents!

fmajor- that's too funny :D

yup- Purcell grill, I got the mesh because I'm normally grilling cutthroats w/ it, but it worked equally well w/ the steaks and lobsters :)

it was a little bit of a challenge, the snow was ~ 5-6' deep where we were, so there were no rocks to use for the grill, I ended up cutting a small green fir to use to hold the grill up, of course the fire soon began to sink, but the green logs didn't- I had to keep tamping (carefully) the green logs down as the fire sank to keep the grill the right distance from the fire, worked really well- might have just been lucky too :)

Nice! Everyone should cook a fancy meal while camping at least once. Al fresco has a whole new meaning. ;)
