i just recently purchased a survival golok made with buffalo horn.my question is.... how durable are the handles for chopping? i dont see any pins of any sort and the blade is not a full tang construction. can the buffalo horn handle the prolong chopping that these blades were made for?thank you

I have been using one for a couple of years with no problems, other than that I really don't like the handle design to begin with.
Mine has seen a lot of use, but mostly on small limbs, light vegetation and undergrowth. I haven't done a lot of heavy chopping with it, but so far so good.

I have used a few of the blades, you can get cracks in the handles. This is a problem with all such designs, you see similar for example in the HI khukuris. Your best bet is to drill a small hole at the base of the crack and then fill it in with some epoxy. You can see damage which could lead to failure, but there are few reports of sudden extreme failure as in you were chopping with no warning and the handle flies off.

can the knife be left in a hot car or would it cause the handles to damage even more?

The horn can probably be treated as you would handles made of stag. An occasional oiling with mineral oil should do it. At the HI forums they also recommend lanolin (if you raise sheep, your buffalo horn handles will never need treatment :D)

Having said that, water buffalo horn from this part of the world (South-east Asia) is pretty durable stuff and has been used as knife handles for centuries. It seems to resist fungus and rot pretty well for a natural material in a hot/wet climate like in SE Asia where just about anything natural starts to rot after a week in the outdoors.

I've just been clearing a horrible shrubby bush called lantana all weekend with a few other blokes (grows to about 7 - 8 feet high). We used a variety of knives. Everybody agreed that no other tool was as effective as the survival golok on this type of shrub. I was so impressed with the blade that I have just ordered an XL and an XXL version to complement my L version - a lot more to clear yet. :)
