#129513545 little magnisium scaled folder, ceramic blade. (no hole?)

Someone`s been spending way too much time on ebay...!!!

I questioned the ceramic folder without the hole, too. Doesn`t look like any Spyderco I`ve ever seen, but I`ve been wrong before.

TheBeak,

The sheath on that fixed blade looks identical to one I have on a fixed blade made buy a custom knife maker (may be they used the same source?!). Looks more like a steak knife than anything else? what do you guys thinks? LOL

The ceramic blade was a Tak Fukuta design, and I think that the actual blade was a Kyocera product. A nice little knife.

I've seen these little magnesium-handle folders. I believe they're made by Tak Fukuta, or to his pattern, anyway. Very light, very unique. I don't think they're "true" Spydies but may have been among the other knives Spyderco imports, hence the association. I'm guessing that's the story behind the fixed-blade as well.

I dunno about that little Mariner. Pics are pretty lousy, and that blue background worries me a bit. But I can't see how you could get those images without a real mini-Mariner. whether it was Spydie-made or someone got a Ladybug II and a little inspiration from the mini-Police, I have no idea. Neat either way.

That little Mariner necklace does in fact exist. But don' t know if the one on e bay is the real deal.

The Taiyo on e-bay is a nice knife. I picked one up several years ago for $40. I believe it was a closeout and the retail was much higher. It is definitely NOT a Spyderco but I think I may have gotten it from Ironstone which may account for the confusion. It is a high quality Seki piece and probably a good value for under $50. I don't know about the ceramic but I seem to remember Sal wearing one of the miniMariner necklaces at the NYC custom show a few years back.

FYI the Mini Mariner came in all SS, and also a limited run of an abalone version was done up.

Am truly impressed with the recall, quite accurate.

Spyderco has a pretty good relationship with the makers of Seki. Most are smalls shops with very high quality and limited production capacities.

About 10 years ago, I had this bright idea to produce a model for each maker under the makers actual name. I felt this would be a good opportunity for each maker to "show his stuff" and the collectors to get to play with some never before made stuff.

We ended up producing models under the labels; G.Sakai, Moki, Taiyo, Tak Fukuta, Hiro, Fukuyama (under the "Solo" label).

Spyderco was the sole importer and used Spyderco quality standards on the pieces. They were all quite exquisite.

Inventory & promotion became too difficult for this small company to handle so repeat production was dropped except for G.Sakai, Moki and Solo which we still import and are still developing new models.

Sal, I was unaware you were still importing G. Sakai. I've got a folder and a couple of fixed blades. One of the fixed blades I believe is called the Archestrel(?) it has a short heavy duty blade with Spyder serrations and a red micarta handle. I would love to get this knife in a plain edged version. Is it currently available and can you point me in the direction of a dealer?

TIA,

The fixed blade went for $113!!! Shrewd or sucker?

I put in a max bid of $40. Winner or loser?

True I've been spending too much time on e-bay but I've been loading up on Sydies for excellent prices.

Speaking of which, I saw some more on Ebay.. this one I've asked Titan, but even he couldn't tell.

So I'm posting the pics here. Wonder what model this is??

Notice the clip looks like that of a Benchmade.. weird!!

Dan

Dan, I do believe that is a Hunter. It is not an early model as the handle edges are camfered.

J.C. Steve, The Taiyo is a great little knife but I think $113 is a little steep.

Yeah, that's a Hunter. Later became the Pro-Venator (what does taht word mean???). Did the early models of this knife have a round hump instead of the odd "fin" shape? Maybe I'm mis-remembering. I've only seen a half-dozen or so, and all were some time ago.

-Drew

Corduroy, I'll check mine tonight for the hump. Mine is early model serrated LH. I think Venator comes from the Latin for hunt or hunter. I believe the original name of the Pro Venator was the Pro Hunter but there were copy right problems(?). Maybe Sal can elaborate on that a little.

Phantom is correct on the word "Venator". Knife name has been changed to Pro Grip like the lite sweight version.

The pic is a C03 "hunter model". It does seem to hve the chamfer around the handle rather than the square edges which would put it mid to late '80's. Gin I steel.

Drew, the hron ws on the earlyh models as well.

Ron - Clip looks like a Benchmade? Perhaps you are not aware that Spyderco originated the pocket clip in 1981. (hence the name "Clipit"). Benchade didn't begin making clip knives until the early '90's. I would say that perhaps the Benchmade clip looks like a Spyderco?
sal

Sal, hehehe.. I believe it was I who mentioned that the clip looks like that of a Benchmade's.
smile.gif

Yes, I am aware that Spyderco originated the clip-its or the pocket clip on these folding knives. But I think you guys went on to develop it further, and maybe BM stuck it out with using that clip design up to the present?
smile.gif

Sorry about the confusion, and I stand corrected.

Whoops!! I just went ahead and checked on my Wegner. It's the same as the one posted on the pic.
smile.gif
Sorry about that.
smile.gif
I guess I've been looking at the Military clip for so long, I didn't realize that the Wegner has that clip design, too. My mistake, sorry again, Sal.

Dan

Sal, I noticed.
smile.gif
hehe..

That's probably why I mistook that clip for that of a BM's, because they apparently use just one design for the clip on almost all their folders.
