Since Butch starts with the Al Mar SERE 2000 and then guts it and replaces the mechanism with his scale release is this a "custom" knife? Does it matter that they all go back to Al Mar and then to Chopra Cutlery who paid for it all up front to be sold to dealers and not directly to the end user?
 
Check out the threads started by Dr. Lathe (Neil Blackwood) in the Emerson forum about using an existing blade and turning it into a custom.
 
Yep, I agree.

I've gone through the whole analysis tree from custom to semi-custom to customized production to limited run production to production. I think of this as a semi-custom piece since Butch puts in nearly a day's work and parts he has to make to change the existing knife into something else. Pity we can't get them with different scales or in damascus.
