I recently became interested in the Vallotton Sub-Hilt model, particularly the D/A conversion model. Checked all around and figured I had long missed the train. But, luckily for me I was able to score this one from the man himself, Butch Vallotton. Took me a while to get a vid uploaded (go easy on me, it's my first attempt at videoing a knife), but here is my newest pride-n-joy, Vallotton D/A conversion #254.

I couldn't tell from the video, how do you "select" how it'll open-manual or A/O? I'd never heard of this before and it's pretty awesome. Does this guy have a web page or some videos on YT or anything that explains how the mech. works? It's very interesting. I'm just assuming it takes some pretty advanced machine work to accomplish that, is there any visible changes to the outside of the knife, thicker or anything? Always been a fan of the look of the knife but this is just freaking awesome. If I may, (and you don't feel it would violate forum advertising policies) would you mind sharing what you paid for the converted knife?

I've seen them go for about $400 as a D/A, and that's about what I had to spend.

If you go full screen at HD on the video and watch the first time I fire it automatic, notice my thumb and the small section of black scale between the hilt and subhilt - you push it towards the back (spine) of the grip to fire the blade auto. It is a small movement and takes a decent push to accomplish, not something that would happen without a determined effort.

If you don't deploy the scale release, the knife functions and behaves exactly as a manual folder, both opening and closing. Closing the knife after automatic deployment is a bit different: the last 20% or so of closing the blade you can feel the spring being compressed (still easy to do one handed as the video shows - notice the audible click as the spring locks). Additionally, when the blade is opened manually, the "release scale" is then locked in place and doesn't slide at all.

The knife is super cool as a manual blade, with unique style and blade proportions (the spine is beastly) and extremely high build quality, especially the fit and finish. Add the slick and secret D/A function and you have a GOT TO HAVE addition to the collection.

ETA: CK, I just noticed you're up the road in Cowtown. Hit me up if you're ever in Lancaster and I'll show it to you in person.

Didn't even notice your were in Lancaster, I almost always notice other local guys... I used to work in Lancaster and also date a girl there, now days I work at home in my shop and am married and don't get down that way much but next time I do I will definitely take you up on that, I'd love to see that knife in person, we can grab a drink at BW's and show off our knives to each other.

Btw your dog is gorgeous, we're a dog family and just recently had to give our beloved German Shepard back to the family we got her from (we took her in for "a few weeks" while their other dog was old and sick but that turned into months and months and we got attached to her).
