Value affected

Is the resale or trade value of a knife affected by a professional sharpening and bevel reconfiguration? Assume that for comparison purposes the knife is otherwise like new. I have a few like this but would really like to improve on the factory edge, but I don't want to kill the value by doing so. I'm kinda new to this, been a gun-guy about 30 years and know how some mods add and some mods subtract from value. Thanks for any input.

I would guess that it depends, and most likely would affect the value. A collector would want the knife to be untouched. Someone that wanted to buy the knife to use it might accept it if they thought they could rely on the quality of the job. If someone just says they had the knife "professionally sharpened" that could mean they took it to the hardware store and the guy that sharpens lawnmower blades sharpened it. So it's a matter of what angle the blade is sharpened to, what tools they used for the sharpening, and how good the job is. I've read too many stories on these forums where someone had a knife professionally sharpened and they really messed it up.

It depends is the right answer.

I've seen rebevels as a plus in some purchases because I trusted the person/system that did it and I felt it would make the knife cut better.

If you are dealing with a sharpened knife that needed a sharpening, it would be used, therefore a depreciation is already begun, right?

I would pay more if one of the pros on this forum put a mirror edge on a knife. People who don't know much about knives seem to think factory edges are the best possible. However, I wouldn't describe myself as a collector.

I find that if I have a knife to sell then nobody wants it. If I am looking to buy then it is on everyone's want list. YMMV. I never worry about resale; if I want to use a knife I sharpen it to make it mine.

And this is why it depends.

Get a middle of the road knife and have it sharpened by someone who knows what they are doing and it's now a laser, value probably goes up.

Get a knife and have it reground/reprofiled by someone who is very well known for doing it, value probably goes up.

Get a super rare collectible knife and have it sharpened, value will probably go down.

Those aren't absolutes either, just possible scenarios.

I don't mind touch ups and use, but I'll avoid a reprofiled edge unless it's a great deal.

It depends but usually yes.

Exactly. ;):D

In my experience, knives that I received that were "touched up" aka not fully resharpened/reprofiled needed to be resharpened on arrival which is a pita IMHO...

So, it depends!
