Value and questions on Schrade OT "Mustang"

I have a Schrade Mustang that is in mint condition, in the box with the old sheath (which isn't much of a sheath...). I have had it since I picked it up back in '95 and a closeout sale at a hardware store when I lived in the Cascades in Washington. I was looking at it the other night and really like how it looks and it is the right size for me. I really want to try it out as an EDC, but since it is mint, and discontinued, am not sure if I should. I only really collect knives as users and this is pretty much the only knife I have that I have never used. Anyone have an idea as to how much it is worth?
Another thought is I could look for an already used one (possibly at the OKCA show in April) and save/trade/sell the mint one. I don't know how much I would have to pay to get a used one in good condition...
I was even thinking about doing some custom work on it; attaching a thumb stud and possible machining the rear bolster to attach a clip to it, to make it more user-friendly for me. Any thoughts on my ramblings? What have those of you who have used this knife think of it? I am interested in trying a carbon steel folder (I do like my Opinel that I carry sometimes), and give my Cold Steel Voyager a rest. Anyone know what kind of steel the blade is on the Mustang?
I really like the Mustang's slim profile and classic looks, even though it is a little heavier.
Anyway, just curious what others thought,
Thanks,
Brome

Hi,

The Mustang is a really nice knife, as mentioned, the slim clasp knife shape handles nicely. The fact that the 1095 blade locks is also really nice:).

Weather you should use it is up to you, but I would. The knife retailed around $50, and is still pretty common on Ebay, and stuff(around $35-40 for a new one). My local Sears had a bunch until they redid the display cases a bit back:(.

If it was a Schrade Son of a Gun, I would probably keep it mint, as those are kinda tough to find. This model was a Mustang with a locking saw blade, why they chose to lock the saw blade insted of the main blade I don't know:).

HTH:D:).

OK, I have seen those at shows, but didn't know they were called Son of a Gun. The first time I saw one, I really liked it, until I picked it up and found only the saw locked. I will have to agree with you. I still like it, but wouldn't carry it; I like my blades to lock.
Any thoughts on my idea of adding a thumb stud and a clip?
Thanks.

The clip idea sounds really good. The thumb stud is also a neat idea, I've often wonder why it isn't incorparated on more traditional folders, along with the nail nick. I don't think fitting one to the blade would be a problem, but it will take some getting use to(strong thumb's:)) because of the beefy back spring the knife has.

:D:).

Hey bob bowie, what's the model # on that Case? Darn nice looking knife. Though I'd imagine only available in their lousy SS, instead of their CV carbon.

That's an old(40 or so years) Case model 5165. they still make the pattern every once, and a while, as a collectible in that wonderful:rolleyes: stainless of their's.

I pulled the picture from a big time Case dealer's site, and alas, it had a pretty good price on it:). For a user I'd probably check out Winchester, as they've made similar patterns in carbon steel.

HTH:D:).
