Red, Welcome . Good first post . I've not seen that particular model, but it sounds like the way Buck does some, others I've seen on the opposite side choil area . Perhaps someone more familiar w/ your model will be along shortly and can give you more that I . Thats the 121 Fisherman and yours has 425M steel from 1991 .
Hope you'll check in with us from time to time . DM

thanks david, is that a good grade of steel for a knife?

Here is a recent discussion on 425M & other blade steels:

425M is really a medium grade steel that Buck brought to maximum advantage with its heat treatment. It does not compare to modern super steels like S30V.

Here is a thread about "super steels" :

Red, Its a good stainless and edge holder . But that knife is worth more unused . If you want to use one get another of that model or different and use that one . A nonserialized model . DM

Hello Red and welcome!
I have never heard of that special project. Could you possibly show us pictures of the knife? It is possible that it is a project that someone else did on a batch of Buck knives but a picture really would help.
Do you have the Buck box? Maybe there is a catalog number on the box lable that might help.
