i have some "junk" silver dimes. i can look up the spot price but i forget how much silver is in a dime. is it 1/10 oz?
quarters are 1/4 oz?

thanks..............Bill

A dime would weigh 0.0729 of a troy ounce. Dimes were 90% silver so I reckon that's 0.06561 troy ounce of silver in a dime. Hope you have lots of them!

Forget what I said above, I found an interesting website www.coinflation.com that shows the metal value of American coins in a simpler manner.

As of March 16, 2007, a 1946-1964 dime has a silver value of $0.9476. A 1932-1964 quarter has a value of $2.3691.

But what do you do with those silver coins - melt them down? I thought it was a federal offence to destroy currency?

Was not a federal offense to melt down coins until recently. The penny's melt value has exceeded the face value considerabley for (mostly) copper pennies (pre-1982, I think), and the feds can't have the coins disappearing.

Here in canada the government is considering getting rid of pennies altogether.

Here they are talking of revaluing the penny to $0.05, but if they do that where will it stop?
