I was just looking for some opinions on Gerber and Columbia River knives. I have a few of each, but opt to carry my Spyderco or Benchmades. I read in one of the other posts I put up that some didn't seem to like the AUS6M steel the my CRKT's are made of and I heard that Gerbers are made with 440A. Just thought I'd get some input :p

Gerbers tend to be really easy to ding. I wish I had a nickel for every time I've rolled the edge on my Gerber multis, even with a fairly thick edge.

AUS-6M and 440A performance is very similar. 440A will hold an edge a little longer, and AUS-6M is a bit easier to resharpen.

Heat treat can make a big difference though.

I haven't owned many Gerbers, but there was a time when I owned over 20 CRKT knives, and to be honest know I own 1.

I kept my Mirage fodler with 440c blade, but all of the aus6 and aus8 knives I sold. With the exepction of the Urban Shark, I had constant problems with rusting, now matter how much I wiped down and re-oiled the knives. They didn't hold an edge well, although they were easy to sharpen. But it was the rusting that made me get rid of them.

I just got the new CRKT 2005 catalog, and they are dropping down to aus4 now, which is a bad move IMHO.

CRKT used to be a company that I really liked, but it seems to me theya re slidding towards the "flea market" brands.

Well, it CAN get worse after all.

Can't blame the factories. They are just making what CRKT wants to put out there. :barf:

in my opinion i would never buy gerbers that have 440a stainless. if i wanted to sharpen my knife each day then it owuld be a different story. i once read that 440a is great steal as long as it wasn't on a knife. i would however buy their 154cm knives. and as for CRKT i think they are a good quality knife though sometimes over priced. i would only buy one to use if it had the 8A. i did however buy my little brother one of the pecks for christmas. just my .02

I had a 3.25 lockback hunter, an EZ Out large and a junior EZ Out, and a Silver Knight. Now, all I have are the Silver Knight (jr EZ Out is on eBay). I didn't like mine, the Silver Knight wasn't a hard user. As for CRKT, I now currently have a M21-14 that I just got, it's huge and I am chomping at the bit to play with it, hopefully I'll get out after this weather clears up. I also have an old M16, pre flipper, that holds up great. I also have a new M16Z flipper, haven't used that yet. An M16 EDC, might give that to my sister or my girlfriends sister, they want a knife to keep in their purses, and that knife just doesn't cut the mustard with me. I also have the CRKT Ryan Model 7, trying to trade that for a Ryan Model 7 black. I have a CRKT Tighe Tac, which I see no reason for owning, just use it as a dress knife. I think that's it, I have a whole slew of CRKT's up for sale on eBay, I just was not happy with them. I don't claim to know much about CRKT dropping the quality of their steels, but I do know that I only see the CRKT's that I own as tools, most of them are going to go from the collection box to my toolboxes and camping/fishing gear.

I have a Gerber Pro-Scout multi-tool that is my favorite multi-tool, and I have a Gerber Harsey Air Ranger that is very nice (except the blade-steel is'nt the very best).
I don't really see anything wrong with Gerbers, but Spyderco and Benchmade are both better IMO.

CRKT has some great custom collaborations for a very affordable price, but once again, I think Spyderco and Benchmade make better knives in every regard.

Good luck,
Allen.
