Hello, I have been collecting Buck knives for some time, Vanguard being one of my favourites. I thought I have it collected with all steels available, until a fellow told me that there was a limited run in 440C. Do you know something about this and if it exists, where eventually I can find one?

Yas, Welcome to the Buck forum . The 192 didn't come out until the early 90's (92-93) . Buck disconntinued use of 440C in 1980-81 and I don't know of a 'special run' for that model using 440C steel so, I think you got some incorrect info.. Your source may have it mixed up with 425M steel which is a possibility and the blade would be stamped with a - or / a 92 stamp for certain is and a 93 maybe a carry over at best . Then Buck has probably done some special runs for that model with up grade steels as it is popular . I just don't have that info. on hand . DM

Hi Yas,

As DM stated above Buck did change from 440C to 425M to 420HC. However, that said they do put out LE's and SO's with better steel options. I have a nice SO 401 Kalinga with stag handles and 440C steel that was made in 2005. So it is possible that a run of vanguard's was made using 440C, the LE/SO list's that are on the BCCI web site don't show what steel was used, so I can't help you find your answer any better than DM did. Ask your friend if he knows what year the knife you are looking for was issued and if he knows who it was made for (cableas, BP, Dick's) as I maybe able to identify a SO knife by that information.

Maybe one of the other fellows here will know the answer!
