The wood handles are nice, but if you want a better grip, go for the "Sure-Grip" rubber handle.

Also, I strongly recommend getting the ATS-34 steel, rubber-grip version that Buck sells exclusively through Bass Pro Shop. Buck's ATS-34 runs circles around the standard 420HC. I dressed my last deer with the ATS-34 version and was very pleased with the performance. The knife takes and holds a fantastic edge; it has a good blade size and geometry as well.

I agree that the sheath leaves a lot to be desired. I'm thinking of getting a custom kydex for mine.

I've got both and like'em both. I dont use them hard so Icant vouch for hard use. I'd say it's probably personal preference. The sheath does leave a little to be desired, I use the Cordura sheath. I also modified one for better carry while sitting. After Xmas I'm going to track down a Kydex sheath for carry on my work overalls.

I like both the wood and the textured rubber. I have found that as soon as either gets bloody, they become quite tacky. Some people have told me that the rubber is better in very cold conditions though.
