Greetings. Is there a difference in age between blister packed vs yellow boxed vantages? I'm trying to buy newer ones to avoid centering and blade-spacer contact issues. Thanks.

No one else as jumped in so I will. I would say no age difference. When clam packaging is offered on a model, box packaging is also. They each have a different catalog number. One example.... the WalMart South of me does not have a manned sporting goods counter and the Buck knives tend to be clam packed and hanging on a peg hook. The WalMart North of me has a manned sporting goods counter with the Buck knives in the display case. They are boxed. /Roger

I purchased the small vantage select. Dunno if I'm going to like it, but I though I'd give this pocket clip flipper thing a try. Usually I carry my 309, which is all the knife I need 99% of the time. I think I've caught the collecting disease.

Don't let the flipper on the small Vantage turn you off of all of them. I don't like the small one just because, #1 it is too small for me and #2 the flipper doesn't work nearly as well with the small blade as it does with a larger blade.

On the OP age question, I dont remember the clam packs being available at 1st and the centering was an early issue so a clam pack would be less likely to have an issue, if that is indeed the case.

Just guessing though and havent looked it up in the catalogs.

When they came out as new in the 2009 caatalog they show the Avid and Select available in both the box or clam pack but not the Pro. The same goes for the new Force models. I guess they feel that a clam pack just isn't a suitable package for a Pro.

Yeah, sounds right to me Dave, thanks, and the non-Pro's didnt really have the issue, right?

Kev, I have them all and I never had an issue with any of them, Pro or otherwise, maybe I was just lucky. The only issue I've had was with one of the new Force Avids and it was minor. It was so tight that it was difficult to use the flipper. I loosened it up a bit and it worked great after that. The blade isn't PERFECTLY centered, but it's not even close to rubbing so I don't find that an issue.

My vantage select arrived today. In was blister packed, dated 01/03/2012. I am very pleased with it, mostly because it opens so well with the flipper (it is the small 340). The liner engages fully, slight past center of the tang with an audible click. Blade centering is close to perfect and the blade is well clear of the liners. The tip clears the rear spacer by plenty in the closed position. The edge was very sharp and push cut paper no problem. I really like the glass reinforced nylon handles. They are light, strong and nicely textured. It would be great if Buck offered these in different colors. Clipped on a pant pocket the 340 rides comfortably due to its low weight and slim profile.

A few minor issues. I will probably go over the liners and scale edges with some sandpaper to removes sharp edges. The spacer on my center post rattles around; I may put a washer next to it or get rid of it completely. While the blade can be opened easily via the thumb hole right handed, it is impossible to do left handed, presumably due to the location of the liner lock. The nice flipper makes it a non-issue.

This is a very nice knife. For $20, it is a lot of value. Bravo, Buck!

I have and like the vintage:thumbup: Buck yellow cardboard box and the newer Buck yellow cardboard box. I hate the plastic that my local ChinaMart sell's Buck in.

More likely that "Clam Pack" retailers wouldn't be suitable for carrying the Pro.
