Vantage pro edge holding?

I recently bought a vantage pro for a friend of mine. After fondling it for a bit i decided i should buy one for myself. When i got the knife today it bumped out my mini grip as the days edc. Out of the box it push cut paper without a hiccup. Now after some light edc use (cutting fishing line, opening a few packages, the blade struggles through push cutting paper. For the light use that i did i would think that a Bos ht s30v blade would hold its edge better. Does this sound about average? My mini grip holds its edge better and so do all my fixed blades (the majority of my collection). Might i have stumbled upon a bad batch of steel?

I've had my Vantage Pro for a little over a year. In that time it's seen a lot of use. I've sharpened it once, and it's still shaving sharp. Great knife, great steal!

Are you sure you just don't have a micro burr? Strop it on a belt or a real strop or steel it lightly and see what it does. Push cutting is not the easiest cut for a blade that has seen any kind of use at all anyway.

Also, it's really not uncommon for the minute edge of a factory edge to require micro beveling or even more before you get the good steel as long as the HT was done well overall.

If this continues after some touch ups and time, then it is possible you may have gotten a bad one but coming from Bos, that is probably not too frequent. I'm sure each Vantage Pro blade, like any other production knife, is not tested before it leaves the factory . . .

I agree with Reeek, its probably the factory edge, they are always fairly rough. I don't have a Vantage Pro, but I do have an Avid, and it holds an edge exceptionally well after convexing.

I agree with the others. I never judge a knife by the factory edge. After a few sharpenings you get down to virgin alloy and you can really determine the performance.

I have a Vantage Pro. It holds its edge QUITE well. Never chips. I measured the hardness at 59.7. The Paul Bos heat treat of S30V is excellent.

Like others have said, it's best not to judge a steel by its performance with the factory edge. I have a Vantage Pro that I took down to a little less than 30 degrees inclusive on my Edge Pro. I've cut a ton of cardboard with it, and the edge holding has been superb.
