Hi y'all,

I was just wondering if anyone here carries a Vaquero Grande on a daily basis.

Later,
John

I used to... (for protection against the neighbor's rabid dogs).

But got tired of the bulk. Anybody willing to let go of their first-generation VG sheath?

The clip is okay, but I feel that for a folder this huge, it really needs a sheath instead of a pocket clip.

Dan

I have two VG's; one in the pocket of my car door, and the other in its sheath at home. I sometimes carry this, and have not found it to be uncomfortable with the sheath. The ability to carry a folder with any blade length is the only advantage to living in CA!

Just realized this is my 100th post.

Does that mean I have to stop asking newbie questions?

Not really a daily basis, but an occasional basis. Whenever I feel it would be wise to "go big". It's too big to carry comfortably, even with the sheath. When I do carry it, I just put in my back pocket, usually covered by my untucked shirt.

What I've been thinking about (but have yet to go forward with it) is to make a shoulder rig thingamajig, a la Bladerigger' Associate Harness. I don't know if there are any legal issues involved, however. Folders (of any size fortunatley) are about the only thing that isn't illegal here in Kali - otherwise I'd be totin' around a big fixed blade!

Another CA Vaquero carrier here. I also carry it in my back pocket sheathed.

Although I've only carried it around the garden, so far. Throws terror in the hearts of artichokes, I can attest.

I forget who it was who likened the drop-shake and flick method of opening this badboy to the opening of Dracula's castle gates.

I also carry it occasionally, but not daily. I never carry it with the sheath. Either it's in the pocket of my jacket, or just slipped into a front pocket.

I carry my Vaquero Grande occasionally. I carry mine like Joe: just drop it into a front pocket, tail end up, without the plastic sheath. Works best if you wear loose fitting pants with fairly deep pockets, like Levi Dockers.

Chinook, I'll take credit for the "gate to Dracula's castle" comparison. I'm glad you liked that one.

Never carry a knife shorter than your schnoz.

Stop when you get to bone.

Not daily, but when I go downtown I slip it in my back pocket. If you see some of the places I go, you might too! The VG is also the first knife I grab if I have to run out the door bacause of a dog etc...

I don`t carry a Grande but I do carry a Lg. Vaq. everyday. Back pocket next to my wallet, tip down. The Grande may be just a little big for this method though. Don`t sell the 5" Vaq. short,it`s still a big mean blade that scares the hell out of folks.

I used to. carries pretty well for me ...usually behind my hip, but it recently got replaced by the Sifu.

I got two VG's actually, for $35 buck (when the old style was beingclosed out) it scores as one of the best cutlery deals ever. THey make great folding kitchen/camp knives.

Hey, Yek!

Not bad at $35...

Now, if only someone would teach me how to get rid of these dang serrations...

If and when the time comes, I believe it'll come out to be chisel-ground, right? I mean, one side flat?

Dan

Dannyc,

Well, it won't really be chisel ground, as the blade will still be ground on both sides, but you'd have a single-ground edge bevel, like on the Emerson Commander. Of course, if you're going to grind the serrations off, you could just grind the other side of the edge to match. I've been seriously considering doing this with my VG, and I definately would if I actually used the thing. As it is, it's just an emergency knife, never really used, so I haven't bothered.

Danny,

I had the serrations ground off of one of them by a guy who sharpens knives at the show that I bought the knige at. He did a pretty darn good job too, considering the oddity of my request. When he was done I was showing off to Carver and I shaved my whole forearm with one pass.

My other Vaquero I reground the serrations on, I took my 1/2" dremel sanding drum and removed them pesky micro serrations. it looks like a short breadknife on crack now, but it is effective and does not bind or drag like other serration patterns.

Even though my Sifu has replaced my VG in my front pants pocket I still carry the VG almost everyday. Its now in it's sheath clipped into the pocket of my motorcycle riding suit. I like it because its easy to open with gloves on.

BTW, I also bought two for $35 when SMKW was blowing them out.

Just today the thought of hiding Sifu#1 in a bush outside court gave me the cold shivers
smile.gif
. So I put it away and for the first time since the Sifu came in, packed my early-production Vaquero Grande. Just outside court, I bend over to "tie my shoelace" and palmed that big booger straight into a shrub

.

It was there after court too, and I was glad. It's a damn fine knife for the price, even the newer clip version...although it's no Sifu.

I think my VG's (and my Sifu, when it gets here) are going to be among my daily carry knives from now on. See my review on the Thunderwear I got yesterday.

I carry my VG just about every day. When on drill, it is my backup to my khuk. I like to think of it as my "pocket khukuri"!
One gripe though, I wish I'd have gotten one with a clip. The sheath is too bulky for wear in BDU's under my LBV. I'd rather have the clip and "dummycord" it to my belt loop.

Anybody out there want to trade their clip-VG for my kydex-sheath VG?
