I've got an X2 and ordered am thinking about ordering a Vaquero Grande. Despite complaints about Cold Steel quality (I've got an earful for them with my Scimitar and Ti Lite), the Voyager line and all their lockbacks seem to be very high quality; all their locks seem very strong and the blades are always well made and sharp. I like the curve of the blade---it reminds me of a reverse, larger Civilian in a way with stabbing potential. Does the blade make much of a difference? Also, does anybody like the Deseprado? It also has the same blade shape but is a fixed blade. I imagine I would get a custom sheath for that. Thanks for the help.

From what I have seen the Desperado is being made out of a much lower grade steel than the regular Vaquero line. The blade style is more for slashing than stabbing. The cutting power of this blade design is very impressive. Cutting power is lessened with this design as the blade gets shorter. My Vaqueros'(Grande to Lobo) are all older ones that were aquired at a liquidation sale. They have been excellent cutters. I do not know if the new steel being used is a down grade from the older models. I do know that the names have been changed. I think they used to be Vaquero Grande, Vaqureo, Hombre and Lobo.

My Vaq's are razor sharp and feel great in the back pocket on a lonely trail. Snag one if you can.

Vaquero Grande is one of the finest production folders ever made -- recurved serrated blade cuts like a chainsaw, and you can use it to slice bread or clear brush. Be sure to get the VG and not one of the smaller ones.

Desperado is made of inferior steel.

I, too, have issues with the Scimitar and Ti-Lite VI -- both are interesting knives with serious flaws.

The Vaquero Grande is a better knife than the Voyager X2. I think the difference in durability is that the VG is full flat ground and the X2 is hollow ground. I've worked one VG hard for many years. I got an X2 that died on me in next to no time. The edge rolled, then a huge chunk broke out of it. Good looking blade, but I had to go back to the VG for the woods.

I carry the V. Grande by rolling the knife around in my pocket (right side) and catching the pocket clip into the small watch pocket. This makes it possible to pull the knife stright up and out and inertia open it in the reverse position quickly and smoothly with the tip "down" and edge "forward". The knife rides higher so I keep it under a loose shirt but this may be illegal in some places. I hope this makes sense, it really is a fast carry mode for this big knife. It is an aggressive cutter for sure!
