Heres what Alen said about the motors in another thread.
Alan Folts
I just bought 2 2HP variable DC motors from treadmills at a surplus place, they are open framed but I am going to enclose the motors anyway so that wont matter too much to me. They seem to have plenty of power although tourque is low at VERY low RPM's. These motors go from 0-5000 RPM and the part you cant beet is they came with the controls!
So if ya figure out making a variable speed disc sander they end up being very affordable! They just take a little ingenuity to make the open frame bit work!
I figure for the price I paid for them I could go through 10 or so before I even equalled the price of a real 2 HP DC motor and controler! For that price I will certainly give it a try!
Tom I bought mine from Surplus Center in Nebraska there number is 1-800-488-3407. The price was $39.99 I beleive and it took about $10 worth of stuff from radio shack to wire the circuit board to the motor, enclose the circuit board, and provide knobs and switches and such.
The only drawback I have seen with these motors so far is that you have to turn the speed down to 0 when you turn them on then increase the speed, the original purpose shows ya dont want to turn the treadmill on at 40 MPH...
email me if you have any more questions or need the model numbers or wiring paterns or anything..
Bruce, yeah everything was set up alright, but the controls were just a loose curcuit board, so you need a box to mount them in, plus you want to be able to mount an on off switch and on on idicator light that arent included, I decided to go with an extra switch to make mine reversable also. so all in all the things at radio shack are just luxuries, you could just screw the board and the rheostat down and plug it in when you wanted to use it but for the extra $10 worth of stuff to hook it up right you cant go
Bruce, what ya need to do is figure out which two wires are the actual power to the motor, once that is figured out it is just a matter to change the polarity with a switch, or set of switches...
I dont know your exact motor offhand or I could offer more help...
