Well as I stated it will only start if I help it by tugging on the belt. I've been using this drive motor set up for many years. What I would like to know is the problem in the start windings and can I get it repaired for a reasonable amount against buying a whole new unit?
It's a Baldor Industrial drive
DC motor with an rpm of 2500
spec. 34-9990-3113 (I think)
It has a Multi Drive Penta
I realize these things can be expensive but have been out of the market for so long I have no idea what I may have to put out or really what my problem is all about. When I go visit a repair shop I would like to be able to tell if someone is trying to over sell me.
Your help will be truly appreciated. Thanks.
Frank

Frank, my Bader grinder has a DC Baldor on it and after many years I started to have those problems. also, the motor speed would start jogging. now it seems like once a year I sense it starting to jog a little. here's what you need to do, or at least it worked for me,
that motor has brushes in it, you'll see two cap screws on either side of it. unscrew those and remove the brushes, be carefull they may be stuck in there a little first time you remove them, and handle them carefully.
I just face them off on my disk sander " FLAT " go easy, their graphite and sand fast. there's a lot of meat on them though, I do mine once a year for the last ten years. once their flat, reinstall and you'll think you have a new motor. hope that fixes your problem.

Well, I have hesitated to say anything because I am no expert on electric motors. Does your motor have a capasator ? (that's not how to spell it.) If so, it sounds like you need a new one. I have a three horse power bandsaw that I need to turn by hand to get it running. It needs a new capasitor but I haven't taken the time to replace it yet.

Thanks for the reply ,Tom, but no capacitor on this one. I'm just out of the sack and going for some coffee and toast. I will soon see if bladegrinder's answer for his machine works for mine. I hope, I hope.

sounds to me that the centrifical switch is stuck open . They are mounted in the rear housing plate of the motor . Pull off the plate , you will see it ( has a 2 springs on it ) clean it and make sure it works .

Your description of the problem is perfect .

Thank top you too Jack.
It was the brushes just not making proper contact. They are very short. I'm going to see if the Baldor dealer has some or will get me some.
So bladegrinder, you had that one cased. Thanks again.
