Hi
I am looking for some input on a variable speed motor from surplus
center.I am looking at a 1 1/4 hp 3450 DC permanent Magnet motor
they have for 126 I am wondering if anyone has any input on them or
ownes one, they also sell the V/S controller for 136
and heat sink for 27 are these motors any good or are they cheap
and wont'last,I am also wondering how they are on the bottom end
when grinding slow do they lose power etc.....
Thanks :)

That is the one you want...Alex Daniels has been using 4 of those motors for years If I remember correctly the first one he bought was 15 years ago. They work great at any sped and i know for a fact that they work great at slower speeds as I have ground on Alex's grinder a few times. He has two on grinders and one on a Bandsaw and one on a disk sander...Jim Batson also uses these motors,As soon as I can afford one I will be getting one of these also.At this time I am using there tread mill motor and controller set,I have been using 2 of those for almost 2 years now without any problems..

Nathan,
From Surplus Center, what motor controller setup are you specifically referring? I'm interested.

Mr Wilkins
Bruce put the info on, the set up that is the one I am looking
at it looks to be a good set up for the money I don't thing up could find a better set up.:)

I got my motor and speed controller in today and wired it tonight. I mounted it on my Bader BII and it really works well. I need to do a little more fitting but it tracks well and speeds are easy to set. I can't wait to finish the set up and use it. Will report on how well it works this weekend. Thanks Bruce for the advice.

Hey guys!

I was just wanting to know how this setup worked and does anyone have longterm expierence with the setup? The reason I am asking is I called to order the parts from Surplus center and the guy was a real smarta**. He said that the controller mentioned was not heavy duty enough to work with the 1 1/4h.p. motor.
I was just curious to see how this is working for everyone else. If it has held up for everyone else I will go ahead and order the part numbers Bruce listed. Thanks for everyones help in advance.

All I know is that this is the set up Alex Daniels told me to order, and he has been using his for 15 years..Now I don't know about the controller unless they have changed it from what it used to be...But he has had no trouble,That is all I know.
Bruce

Thanks for your response Bruce. Please don't think that I am trying to put you or anyone else on the spot with my previous reply. I was just double checking after my rather unpleasant conversation with a sales clerk. I appreciate everyones help!

do they have any 2 hp motors for a good price??
i bought a leeson 1.5 hp for my square wheel and i can stop it pretty easily:( and it was around $800

I can also dog down the 2 hoarse treadmill motor I am using now,This has to do with the torque control of the box and not the motor.I use a regular speed 2 harse that I cannot dog down without putting all my weight into the metal I am pushing on.The controller for my treadmill motor was designed for speed and not torque,You might check this out with your controller as the one Alex has on his I cannot dog down, and I have seen him grind a blade pretty fast,he also doesn't put much pressure on the belt as he grinds,he gets onto me for using to much muscle. In fact he is always telling me to leave the muscle in teh smithy and let the grinder do the work.

i bought one of their 2 hp treadmill motors but never set it up yet. all i got with it was a little dial knob for the speed, not a box like with the leeson so this has no torque controls at all. do i need a controller box and heat sink for this motor? i want to set up a vs 9" disc with it.

There should have been a small circuit board to wire to and the control knob and a wiring diagram.I don't have a heat sink on mine, but I also bypassed the inline fuse or breaker that is suggested as if I ground to long the motor would heat up and trip the breaker or blow the fuse,by bypassing this I haven't had any problems with over heating at all,and I have had it grinding for 6 hours straight one day.
