Can any one tell me exactly what to get for a variable speed motor? I have a Bader BIII gringer and want to get a 1 1/2 to 2 h.p. motor with speed control. What I need to know is what specs do I need to look for? Thanks for the help.

You need a variable speed DC motor with controller......best bet is to just buy the whole gizmo from K&G Knife and Gun Supplies, or better yet.....If you know someone who is in the motor biz get them to order it for you..I have a friend who works for a refinery here and gets them for me for $450 complete but havent bought one in many years. I have a variable speed on my disk sander, metal cutting bandsaw, lathe, and one of my 2x72 grinders.

I was at Koval Knives here in Ohio and they have some Leeson VS packages. Give them a call or online visit:

They are fine people!

They have a 1 1/4 hoarse that will work just as good and the controller to go with it for:
$129.50 for the motor
$136.00 for controller
Alex Daniels has been using these motors for years and has had no problems with them.

I am sitting here with a brand New Frink grinder and no variable motor. What I have found is that it takes cunning, planning, and stealth to win an auction for a motor on EBAY. I have managed to get a controller, and have missed a number of motors. Examples include, 3hp dc Baldor brand new, went under $200.00, Reliance 1.5 dc went for $182.00 brand new. Leeson 1.5hp dc also missed at under $200.00. ( I think I am a little rummy from watching EBAY so much)

There are a number of control units on EBAY, and they seem easier to buy than the motors. Less snippers.

Baldor, Leeson, Reliance and probably a few other companies have great web sites for looking up numbers etc, along with retail pricing. I found that local dealers cut the retail price by about a third. Call around it pays to price shop.

The surplus outfit that is recommended might just be the place. I am waiting on their catalog.

DC motor and controlers seem more complecated at first. I do think that you are not supposed to buy a shunt wound motor and only a permanent magnet motor, but I could be wrong.

The Leeson site has their manuals for controlers on line and reading them helps clear up some questions.

Good Luck.

you dont need it to talk, so I wouldnt worry about the hoarse part....but if it is going to be your primary grinder I would get the biggest HP you can afford......2 is a LOT better than 1.5 or 1 HP.
