Variation or Edition?

As I organize my 300 series slipjoint collection with spreadsheets, I wonder what other folks do to differentiate between variations such as actual differences in a design, i.e. types of liners, bolsters or spacers, and things that are just external cosmetic changes, such as different handle colors or materials.

Limited Edition specials to me are a category of their own, but how do you guys list stock models with just different color handles?

I divide the 300 slip joints into Schrade, 1st Generation Camillus, 2nd Gen. Camillus, Buck, Buck Workmen, ersatz Bucks (rebadged Camillus knives made for Smoky Mountain Knife Works as Buck Collectables) and Chicom Bucks. Let’s call each of these a division. Each model within the division could have versions such as the long pull and short pull versions of the 319 Rancher or a 313 Muskrat with one nail cutout or two. A version could have variants like the Winchester 311 or a red handled 303.

Not bad, that makes sense!
