Variations?

In the damascus giveaway thread there has been alot of mention about various variations of the Lahar.

here are a few to give you an idea: Lahar with micarta, different steel, different colors, and frame lock.

So here is what i want to do. I want to start a discusion about what Kershaw could do with the Lahar while keeping it in the $100 - $150 range. This isnt a poll, but a discusion. Keep it civil of course. TW please speak up with what is feasible for Kershaw.

Let me start.

There are two things i want to hit on. 1. a lahar with micarta scales, and 2. a lahar with a diferent blade steel.

The micarta could possibly raise the price of the knife to over $100 MSRP. It is not easy to machine and it doesnt come cheap either. I dont know the exact cost, but generally micarta is considered higher end than G-10. You consider that with the cost with having to include the blades out of Japan, machineing the micarta to the shape, the costs could run it to more than the $100 its at now. Just some simple thoughts.

OK now my personal topic. Blades. We know that VG-10 is outta Japan. Thus alot of the manufacturing is over there. If it was possible, the US factory could make blades out of 14c28n or S30V or some other US made steel. Even the CB technology could make an apperance. It would be american maunfactured compleatly, with everything done in house. The only problem i see with this is the cost of any retooling that would be needed. If that isnt to big a problem, then why not run with it? Use g-10 for the scales. Heck the Lahar could prolly be made cheaper even with this.

I dunno, as i have a limited knowledge of how the $$$ goes into the production of this knife.

chime in guys, could be a really cool subject.

Good topic ol!

I'm diggin the VG-10! It's a fantastic steel when thinned out a bit! I'd like to stay with that steel, but a S30V or S110V blade in a satin finished (polished) hollow grind would be great!

Other than that, a lanyard hole and frame lock would make me happy!

GG, how much more would S30V or S110V push the price?

For me, the Lahar is one of those knives where it was done right the first time. That said, a composite blade with SG-2 and carbon fiber scales would be nice.

Imagine an SG2 with the Lahar's grind...can you say light saber?

I personally would like to see the Lahar in its current incarnation with a spine to edge flat gind, with a 15% per side full convex...

And maybe one that is just a touch smaller, possibly 15% less in all dimensions aside from blade thickness...

Keep it as is...only a mini version. It's hard to tote a knife around
that's nearly as big as me. ;) I handled one at SW's and other then
the size, I love it. While we're fishing in a wishing well here,
I'm game for a 3" auto!!

Well, I can see where this is heading...and someone has to ask the question...I'm old, so I'll sacrifice myself so you young uns can have a full life...

I know GG will shoot me for this, but has there ever been any discussion by the powers that be of starting up a factory custom shop?

I want a small funeral and a nice headstone...

OK some of you have missed the point of this. Maybe i didnt lay it out clearly, but here it is again for the heck of it.

What would we like to see in variations on the Lahar, how could Kershaw pull this off, and would it go over well with the general public (I.E. SELL!)?

Um, didn't Thomas once say that sprint runs and the like were very unlikely unless the knife was made in Tualatin? And isn't the Lahar made in Japan?

Yes. Again folks, this is partly "what could Kershaw do with the lahar design HERE in the USA?"

OL, sorry for not answering your question in the first place.
So in saying that, here's my answer. :D

I think it would do very well with any of the current steels in their lineup.
New Sandvik, S30V, CB of D2 etc.... I would buy one instantly.
I think it would be made better.....if you can understand that.
Not saying that USA is made better than the Japan products.
Just saying I like when the product is made here. I live here, I pay taxes here.
I'm sure the Japanese feel the same way about their products.
IMO, first of all, the design is what sells it. GO TIM!, then the materials,
then where it's made and then price. The last 3 may be in a different order for you.

There could be so many variations of this knife it would make you sick, (Thomas anyway :D )
but I think all of them would sell very well. Especially with that "Made in U.S.A." stamp

my pennies.

add a frame lock with the SG2 steel and lahar's blade profile and you have one helluva knife and still reasonable for pricing :)
