Does anyone happen to know what the heat treating specs are for Vasco Wear? I understand it's not much fun to grind, but makes a pretty decent knife. Thanks
Tom

i made a bunch of knives out of it a while back...the heat treat specs are relatively simple....dont know them but paul bos could tell you....but one thing.....hear me well... do NOT get it hot when you are grinding it or it will become hard like you wont believe....and finish the blade before you send it to heat treat...this is no joke.. i will NEVER make a knife from that stuff again......never.....it work hardens while you look at it......yuccckkkkkkk...

Tom Mayo is VERY right about the stuff work hardening. As mentioned above, I have only worked with Cruwear, not Vascowear, but the two are essentially the same steel. If you do work with it, be sure that you use the old "grind then dunk" method. I work with it without gloves so I am able to tell pretty quickly when it is time dunk it water. It does take a bit longer to make a knife with this stuff but in my opinion, it is worth it. Just don't get it hot!

My experience with Cruwear is that it holds an edge forever. I have some CPM 3V that I am getting ready to grind and I will be able to do a fairly good comparison between the two.

Texas Knifemakers Supply in Houston Texas still carries Cruwear and provide a heat treat service for it as well.

mr wilkins is right...its great stuff... but it sorta deteriorates...it doesnt really rust, it just gets pits....i think there are some way better products on the market now the have great edge holding properties without major corrosion factor....of course i live in hawaii...major salt air and humidity factor here....but 420v, 440v, the stuff mentioned above...talonite, stellite, etc.....why kill yourself with that stuff...
