I picked up a Junkyard Dog today and had to do a little modification. I removed the 'horns' like STR did to his. Then I added a 'Vassili choil.' I needed it a little larger due to bigger fingers, but I think it turned out well. Even though not very much metal was removed, it made the blade ever-so-sightly tip-heavy, thus improving the flipping action.

I did these mods to a JYD2 and found that it made the knife much more comfortable for my hands. Plus it looks cool!

Wow, I was playing around with a photo editor just a few hours ago to see how that would look on the JYD II!

BTW Redsst, what did you use to grind it out? Did you disassemble the knife before grinding?

:) No problem, my Russian friend. You were the first one to mention the idea back in March so you deserve the credit.
Joshua J., I used the grinding wheel that came with my Dremel. The Dremel crapped-out on me a few years back so I stuck the grinding wheel in a drill press and just used it that way. It took about an hour because I was going very slow. I didn't want to mess up such a pretty knife. Also, I took lots of cooling off breaks so as not to let the metal get so hot that it would mess up the heat-treatment.

Thanks Josh.

I really like it better this way. I'm pretty satisfied with the choil, I just need to do a little more work on the "horns." It looks a little odd and un-finished the way it is now. But if I make it smooth and flat all the way along the top, I'll lose the jimping on the spine of the handle. So I'm trying to decide if I want form or function.

I'm currently leaning toward form. :)

I'm alittle lost here...Just what are the "horns"?.

On the spine of the handle, the JYD's kinda come to a point at the end near the blade. This ridge - in conjunction with the thumbgrooves (jimping) - helps keep your thumb on the handle and not run onto the spine of the blade. I removed this so that when I choke up on the blade and use the choil, the horns wont be there to dig into my palm.

Ok...Now I get it...It's the area in the picture directly below the "O" on the keyboard that the JYD is laying on. I also have a JYD, and the only "horns" I could think of are what's on the pocket-clip that stick out on each side.

Thats it exactly. So what does everyone think? Should I remove enough to make the top flush with the blade?

I wouldn't, but it's YOUR knife, so do what YOU want with it. You have to be happy with it, not me or anyone else.

In this are little bump makes sence. I think it you make it same as handle bump under "U" letter (what a coordinate system!) it will match design. Hovewer flattening it completely also works. But on my opinion more "sing for fingers" to sense you have on handle - better.

Thanks, Vassili.

I took the horn on mine down just a tad lower than yours, basically the same but made a smooth curve that fit with the design. Then I added some replacement jimping w/the dremel cutting wheel. Worked pretty good for me, but it takes a steady hand & my jimping wasn't perfect. You could do the same thing w/a small file & control it better, although it would be a bit slower.

Thank for that advice, Gman and Vassili.

Fish, I'd love to see a picture of your modded JYD - from a couple different angles - especially from the side and top.

Well, I'd take pics but I sold it this week to Barrabas . . . but I didn't take it all the way down to even with the blade, instead I kept it slightly above & rounded so it flowed more naturally w/the design.
