Had this head laying around for awhile. I got it with the handle cut off. Decided this morning to get it ready to re-hang. It seems that the previous owner must have quite cleverly used the axe for a dual purpose. As a tool and for hardware storage.

Axe head and contents:

To my question: does anyone know anything about axes simply stamped "VAUGHAN"? I've searched the internet but could not find any information or clues for this logo. My only guess is that it might be a different grade axe to supersteel or sub-zero stamped axes.

Thanks for looking

You got me beat. The most pieces of hardware I've pulled out of an eye is 8 pieces.

I used to have a Vaughan 'Value Brand' 4 pound axe. Despite being a value brand is was a good axe and a nice splitter. From filing it I would estimate the RC hardness of the bit was in the low to mid-fifties. Certainly acceptable.

That axe doesn't look too worn. It should make a great user.

Always makes me laugh to see what comes out of old ax eyes sometimes. People will pound anything in there to keep from having to re-hang, the best thing I ever found in one was an old ford car key and they had sharpened the leading edge a bit with a grinder or file
