Vaughan little hatchet

My local hardware has just got some Vaughan hatchets in. This is a little, little tool, with a somewhat delicate looking handle. The head is small, and has a nice thin profile.

Has anyone used one? I'm thinking that it might be handy for light backpacking - just splitting kindling, knocking in tent stakes, & general knife duties.

Sorry to revive this 2 year old thread, but I found it while doing research on the Vaughan Sub-Zero sounding hatchet.

There's lots of work being done on the $20 Vaughan Sub-Zero Hatchet to make it a viable, if not frankly better, option to the Gransfor Bruks Mini pocket hatchet.

It does require a bit of elbow grease if doing it with hand tools but it is a devastatingly effective little tool for 12 oz.

The Vaughn is indeed a very useful tool made much nicer by re-profiling the factory edge, sanding down the sharp butt on the handle, and stripping and re-finishing the handle. A new sheath would be nice too.

I just used a file to do the heavy re-profiling and then worked the edge manually with a sanding belt, sandpaper, and finished with a strop. Convex edge is the way to go, IMO.
